RASCAR: Caution Flags

RASCAR: Caution Flags

by John Simmon » Tue, 01 Apr 2003 02:04:44

There was a point yesterday where a caution flag came out AFTER the
leader had crossed the s/f line.  The running order in my little pack
of cars was 06, 99, me (43), 49, and 26.  This particaulr caution
came out just as my group was approaching the s/f line.

The 06 car evidently panicked at the thought of passing the pace car,
and lifted and braked at the same time, got loose and did a header
towards the apron.  The 99 car whoa'd up trying not to pass the 06
car, and thinking they were gonna go ahead and pass the pace car,
which would have been the proper thing to do, I had too much speed to
try slowing down, so I went between them, past the pace car, and
through turns 1 and 2.  The 49 and 26 cars went with me.

The problem is actually a bug in the sim (saying we've taken the
yellow flag when we actually haven't).  However, it is ESSENTIAL that
everyone keep (and use) their heads in this situation. We all almost
lost a lap because the 06 car freaked out, and the 99 car perpetuated
the situation.

If the caution comes out, the pace car will pick up *THE LEADER*.

If the yellow flag comes out and the leader has already passed the
s/f line (before the caution came out), but before you got to the s/f
line, YOU CAN/SHOULD PASS THE PACE CAR.

Whatever you do, DO NOT perform a panic stop.  It just ends up
freakin everyone else out, and will probably cause a wreck.

I think this happened on the 4th or 5th caution.  Watch your replay
to see what happened.

Actually it's not really a bug just that, much like the drive-thru
penalty, not too many people seem to understand the rule.  The first
time you cross the S/F line after the yellow comes out places you under
caution regardless of whether the leader has taken the caution.  This
means that you are now considered to be in the pacing order, and as such
you can no longer pass for position.  However you are correct that in
this situation you can and should pass the pace car who will pick up the
leader after he crosses the line.  I believe the spotter will tell the
first car that took the yellow to "pass the pace car and catch up to the
end of the pacing line" or something like that, but unfortunately
everyone behind him is dependent on him doing the right thing.

I haven't seen the replay and don't remember exactly why I did what I did. I
remember that though, I also remember a caution coming out where a bunch of
guys just kind of stoppped at the start/finish line and my spotter wasn't
telling me to pass anyone, so I was waiting for them to go untill you told
me (#06 for those following this) to go. I want to see the replay on the
situation you mentioned and see why I did what I did.

I wonder if guys who are in that situation, and don't pass the pace car to catch up of the back of the pack, have their full spotter
on?
I'm not sure if that msg would or would not be one of those that would be affected; be nice to know.

I remember I had to come to a complete start right before the s/f, after slowing, and slowing, because of the 06. My spotter kept
telling me to 'let em by'.  I KNOW if I had passed the s/f before him, I would've gotten a BF.  So I stopped.  Punisher did
apologized to all for that at that time.

Also, I am a rookie to all of this, the races I've run with RASCAR are the
ONLY online racing I've ever done and the only NASCAR game I've ever played
anything but Sears Point and Watklins Glenn. I am learning and I think I'm
getting better, I was a lot closer to the end before I crashed out this
time!!

That brings up another point. EVERYBODY should save their replays so
they can review their performance in the race during the week that
follows the event.  Replays (even short ones) are huge, and can't
always be transferred between drivers.

Joe, I would suggest you stop blocking early in a race.  All it causes is
wrecked cars.  Next time I won't lift.

I'm not trying to block anyone. If I'm in your way then pass me. Toward the
middle of the race I got in a wreck and my car was slower after they fixed
it, so I quit instead of continuing and holding people up.  I am not trying
to hold anyone up, but I've noticed that if someone trys to get by you and
it's not a good move or the right time them it's automaticaly the guy in
fronts fault if it doesn't work out. I remember when I had someone on the
outside of me during the race and I went into one of the turns too hot and
pushed someone to the top and into the wall, that's something I am sorry
for, but it was accidental.

That was Larry (#98), and he was a bit upset, but it appeared to me
to be more warp-indiuced than anything else.  I passed you on the

If that was #98 then it was him that I took to the wall and he does have a
right to be mad, but it was an accident, I didn't mean it. Like I said I
went in too hot and couldn't hold the bottom. Please accept my apology.

Uh-oh, there's that b-word. Wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole.
Got into that was-blocking/was-not-blocking argument  with John Simmons one
time, and now look at me. I have to drive the GayPrideMobile every week.
(Kidding!! Kidding!!Could not resist!!)

Oh, and for the record, John was completely right.

The spotter does not allways tell you to pass the pace car.  However,
there is no substitute for knowing the rules and having situation
awareness.  When the spotter tells you that you are under caution you
should quickly pull up to the end of the pace line.  If you find
yourself behind the pace car AND YOUR ARE NOT THE LEADER, you should
try to pass him, if the spotter doesn't start ***ing (he shouldn't)
then go around the track and pick up the back of the pace line.

Two things:  (note: x & y are car numbers I can't remember now.)

1) On one of the yellows my spotter kept telling me to stay behind the x car
but I could find no x car on the f2 list.  Could someone have had a
mismatched .cup file or something and be in the race under a different
number ?

2)  On another yellow my spotter kept telling me to stay behind the y car.
John (if you are the Camel car) was behind that car.  I passed John to get
behind the y car but John passed me back and took that place.  Meanwhile my
spotter is yelling now, stay behind the y car.  (ok, maybe not yelling.)  I
forget now whether I tried again or didn't want to bug John anymore and
stayed behind him.

I thought that the spotter was god and that we were supposed to listen to
him at all times.  I seem to remember someone saying that.  Anyway John's
example above I was told to stay behind the 06 car so that is what I did.
;o)

Elrikk

PS  I didn't bother to save this particular race but if anyone can tell me
(#99) how I crashed out I'd be grateful.
