GPL + Overclocking = fps...??

by Art McEwe » Sun, 18 Mar 2001 01:52:10

I've been lurking in the overclocking forums to try and decide if I want to
soup up my AMD K6-2 450 (Aopen AX59pro motherboard, rendition v2200 based
video), but they only talk about mhz & core temperatures.   While those are
important issues, what I want to know about is frame rates in GPL!

Has anybody around here compared frame rate before and after an overclock?
Has anybody attempted it with a system similar to mine?

Thanks,

Art.

Unfortunately that's closer to $1500 here then $500.

Thanks, that's the sort of practical info I needed to tell if it was worth
it.

What are you basing that on?

What are you suggesting needs to be "sorted"?

Depends on the track/graphics combination, but 32-34 is common on most
tracks, at places like Road Atlanta or Bermgarten (lite) I'll often dip into
the low 20's.

Art, on your system you should see a steady 36 fps already, albeit at 800 x
600 and sacrificing some graphics like 'arms' etc.
Overclocking will add some fps, but I suggest you first sort out the system
as it may not be necessary.

I spent alot of time overclocking my k6-2s and a k6-3 back in the day, and
the best I could do, even with a homemade peltier+watercooling setup was
500mhz, from 2 350s and a 400.  Removing heat is a major problem with ss7
chips, and unless you're willing to invest time and some money in a lost
cause its just smarter to spend $500 on a 1.2ghz tbird + mobo + 128mb +
Radeon.

Anyway, do the math:  going from 450-->500 will get you 2-4 fps.
Overclocking the vidcard and the FSB will help slightly also.  Where oc'ing
really helps is in 'leveling out the dips' in framerates, which can make a
big perceived difference.

Personal experience. My CPU is slower than yours, and I get 36 fps. So
something might be wrong or you are running too many graphics. A 450 CPU has
its limits.

Hard to say really with so little information. Start turning off graphics in
GPL and see if that gets you 36 fps solid. Use the light version of
Bremgarten etc. Still no solid 36? Have a look at your system: install the
latest drivers for your video card, use a 3D benchmark test and compare
results in a newsgroup for your board, etc.

Depends on the track, I'm 35-36 at places like the glen or Monza (it's never
solid anywhere).

Already using the lite versions with most of the textures turned off.
Climbing the hill into the forest section I'm down in the 20's.

My board vendor (genoa) went under years ago, I have the reference drivers
from rendition, but they make other windows apps go wonky.  I could
re-install them temporarily to see if they make an improvement.

Art, I'm beginning to fear that your particular board + videocard and GPL do
not make a happy combination. Upgrading to a faster CPU (if possible at all)
might be a better answer than overclocking. But I'm no hardware guru...

When GPL was young, a rendition V2200 based board was a better performer on
that speed machine then the 3dfx.  What I don't know is if my brand works as
well as other renditions.

There used to be a German site that had benchmarks of different equipment
(starting at the back of a monaco grid against 19 AI cars and all the
graphics turned on), but the link to it's dead.

The longer I put off an upgrade the better ;)

Art, a friend of mine runs GPL on a PII 300 with a Voodoo2000PCI. It
runs at 36 fps with 800x600, and most of the detail turned on. You might
want to think about a cheap voodoo as an interim upgrade.

According to Alison's numbers a rendition is supposed to be faster on Pii's
or AMD K6's so I'm beginning to wonder if not all renditions are created
equal.  My vendor Genoa went***up 2-3 months after I bought the board.
I'm going to re-try the rendition reference drivers (although they cause
other problems).

Your Rendition video chip is fine for GPL and faster than a V2. The bottleneck
in your system is the lousy floating point unit in your K6-2. Your CPU equals
to a P1-200. I used to run GPL with a Rendition V2100 in 800x600 and a Celeron
300 with solid 36fps after the start.
