GPL: how to adjust deadzone ?

by Leon » Wed, 26 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi

I am using joystick with the game
setting to all linear and 20:1 ratio
for the steering I still find myself
going erratic.

After alot of laps, I realised it is the deadzone
that is giving me the problems.
Every little bit seems to be affected .
It does not stay centre very well.

Is there any way to adjust deadzone within the game ?

I am using MS sidewinder 3D.

You want full NON linear ie linear slider all the way right.
Especially with a joystick I'd guess.

I believe you need to set the steering *non-linear*, as that will give
you a kind of deadzone in the middle (the response is more gradual in
the centre and speeds up towards the extremes).

The linear setting is better for steering wheels where you have more
control in the centre position.

The easiest way to see what's happening is to turn on the "driver's
arms" feature and watch what happens to the on-screen wheel as you move
the joystick from side to side.

GOOD GOD
that's what's wrong !
and to think I deleted the full install........urrrghhh

You know, everytime I spend 2~3hrs on it
and did get much progress,
I would get really frustrated
and delete the whole game and tell myself
never to touch it again till I get a wheel.

then within 1 day or so, I get to thinking
maybe I should give it a little more time.....

then I would install and before you know it
already started the uninstall...........urrghhhhh

that what the game does to me

I don't think you need to use a wheel to play GPL - Wolfgang Woeger,
probably the fastest GPL driver in the world, apparently uses a
joystick!

Maybe he'd be even faster with a wheel, though!

Absolute rubbish. Linearity is down to the individual and what he feels
comfortable with. I drive with a joystick at the moment and I have it set
2/3 across to the left.

I will admit that the deadspot thing with a joystick can be troublesome. I
have  2 sidewinders. One is a dream to use but with the other one, it is
impossible to keep the car straight.

Leong, I have a utility for setting dead zones. Mail me and I'll forward it
to you.

Sorry Byron my wording might have been a bit strong there. no offence meant
mate. In my experience with GPL and joystick linearity, putting the slider
all the way to the right will stop the car jittering along straights but
still has the effect of making the car drift from side to side and hence
necessitating constant input from the stick anyway. Sure the effect is
lessened to some degree in the form of "damping" the oscillations but it is
still evident. By introducing a deadspot (and I mean a small one, maybe 3 -
4%) I have cured the problem altogether with my wayward Sidewinder.

Regards

Mark

GPL: how to adjust deadzone ?

Hi Mark

thanks a lot for sending me the DEADZONE file.
this is ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL !

It really did improve my driving,
in fact it is so good that I am now consistently
on the road.

I had not been able to stay on the track previous to
this deadzone adjustment,
The transition between accel and hard braking
had always thrown me off
It fact it was so bad I was developing so kind
of "phobia " about hard braking.
But Joystick drivers  have no choice

I also now more aware of the limits of hard braking,
constantly pulling back less to find the slip-limit
to keep the wheel from locking.

This deadzone adjustment is a MUST for anyone
using a joystick.
Now it feels a little like Need for Speed 5   :-0

I haven't spoken to him myself - I don't speak much German, and I don't
know if he speaks (writes?) any English either!

There's a discussion group on Schubi's GPL pages
(http://216.13.117.36/~schubi/index.htm) where he seems to hang out.

Well you can catch him at the IRC server in GPL SpyBoy quite often, so
you might want to try there.
