Radeon 9800 Pro Problems

by Larr » Sun, 07 Dec 2003 11:16:30

Yep...  Here we go already!

First, I got the 9800 Pro 128MB instead of the 9800 XT.  I wanted it, I
touched the box, I caressed it, but I just could not see spending $200 more
for 3-9% more performance.  I really wanted the 256MB of RAM, but maybe next
time.

The best way to describe the performance difference between my old Ti4400
and the 9800 Pro is this...

I ran the Ti4400 at 1280X1024, 16 Bit, No AA and no AF.

I am now running the 98 Pro at 1280X1024, 32 Bit, 4XAA and 8XAF and getting
virtually the same exact frame rates.  Oh, but it's SO much prettier :)

Now, here's the problem.

I did not experience this in testing mode.  Only in a race with a full 42
car field.

There are graphic anomolies to the point where you cannot race.  It looks
like one of the Roll-Cage bars triples in diameter, and starts flashing in
your way across the screen.

If I drop the AA down to 2, and the AF down to 4, the problem _seems_ to go
away.

Ok, what am I missing?

Nascar 2003 I presume? Try D3d instead of Open GL

This *may* be a Cat3.9 issue (if that's what you're using).  Try Cat3.7.  A
quick search on www.rage3d.com might find something.  Also be sure to send
in a bug report to ati's driver feedback.

Ive never experienced what you describe Larry.  I run the latest Omega
drivers.

Personally I can't imagine not doing a clean re-install of your OS.  The
time spent doing a reinstall not only eliminates a lot of possible odd
issues but more importantly gives you "peice of mind" knowing everythinng is
just right.  You also get a pefect place for a fresh drive image including
the new hardware.

Normally,I would.  But I would have to rebuild THREE different winXP boot
partitions.

Not enough time:)

I am using the 3.9's larry, and I haven't noticed this problem.  I have a P4
2.66 at 3.0, with PC333 memory running at 375mhz, and an ATI 9700 Pro.  My
motherboard is an Asus P4PE (845 Chipset)

Just in case it helps...

It appears for the problem to show you have to:

1.  Have 4xAA and 8xAF turned on.
2.  Be running with a full 42 car field.
3.  Have 'view cars ahead' set to a full 42 cars.

In other words, it doesn't show unless you have _everything_ maxed out.

For reference, I'm running 1280X1024X32 resolution.

Larry, I think you're running out of videomemory.

I got the same when running my 9700pro in 1280x960, 4xAA & 4xAF,
everything maxxed out except for in car shadows and shadow volumes.

It happend mostly at the Pwf tracks from the back of the grid and
using a hires carset.

Changing drivers didn't correct things but a 9800xt did :)

My experience exactly with the frame rates.  Welcome to ATI drivers.
