Has any clever person created any AI files for any of the oval tracks?

Hi!

Could you please make it available for download on any GPL-related site
and post the url here? I don't know if I'm stupid or something but I
cannot find your Tally-AI-post from Jan 18th. TIA!

Neither can I, Stephen, if you don't have a place to put them up for DL,
send a notice to Erik Frechette over at "The Pits" and he will make them
available ASAP...

Beers and cheers

i downloaded the zips, installed them, go into the race, then, they all took
off like a bat out of hell,
then only to find out that most of them crashed in the first turn, this was
at tally and mich, it seems
when they hit the bank they crash? what fun is that? is there a cure or is
this just how it is??

And it's not just crashing in corners either -- at Talladega they all seem
to crash into invisible walls at random.  The resulting carnage is amusing
the first time but immediately loses its charm.  In any case, I've found the
files to be of little value in terms of actually being able to compete with
the AI.

If you are talking about all the car's suspension, then it's pretty normal.
It's related to the old TRK and track architecture when updated to GPL.   On
real GPL tracks the banking you have around the corners is very smooth.  In
Nascar Racing 3 (or NR99), the track is still very saccadic.  The suspension
movement is really how it should be on such a track.  The numbers of polygon
you pass through at such speed makes almost for high-frequency bumps,
results of the flat polygons.  In the Nascar series, you don't see it
because the Z-axis does not exist, but when you put those same tracks in a
real 3d environment then you discover the little flaws in the tracks.  All
the bumps everywhere (take a look at Michigan out of T4 and into T1).

But if your talking about the AI bounce, then well.... we can't do anything
for that ;)

Actually about 4 cars survived the 1st turn, but a lap later, the Brabham
suddenly fell apart when doing 320. I mean, it just froze into stone on the
spot. It didn't fly off, it didn't break or brake, it just stopped within
20 metres and retired.
Where can I get those brakes? :-)
Also, the cars bounce around like they are on Belgian "kasseien" instead of
a cement or tarmac.

OTOH, I saw a fastest lap of 48.2 done by Steward and Clark, so IF they
survive, they should be pretty OK.

Given the opportunity to have the AI competitive, yes, sure I would, Olav.
It would be the closest that I could get to in my imagination to the Indy
cars of the mid-to-late 1960s; after the roadster era yet before wings
appeared.
A pity that Indianapolis Motor Speedway isn't available.  Or is it?

Ok, *that's* why I didn't remember downloading...  Aol automatically blocks
large binaries.  That's a good thing, but now I have to go through all the
steps to find it again...:)

I had tried these files from when they were first posted, and was also
quite amused by the rocket take offs and smashes. I saved one replay
where Jimmy sits still, then rockets into the air with flaming engine
for about 20 secs before crashing down, without having even moved or
been hit by anything!! Very freaky stuff, but not really useful for
any racing. Once they get their act together though, the AI are very
damn quick, maybe too quick...

The behaviour of the AI in this Talledega file is reminiscent of the AI when
the very first beta of GPL was "made available".  The AI (and the player's
car) had the ability rocket into space like a flaming 4-wheeled space
shuttle.  Sometimes they would sit, hundreds of feet above the ground,
rotating on their longitudinal axis.  It was quite amazing to see and, even
after the game was released, I held onto the beta version simply to be able
to entertained by the bizarre behaviour of the AI.
