I've described this here before (the trick to invert the GPL
drivers file so the first drivers selected are the slowest, not the
fastest) and now I've finally put both the explanation and the actual
file up on my web pages.  Go to:

Be aware that this technique is not without implications for the AI since
if you advance session past Practice and thus have a semi-random starting
grid,  the slower drivers will tend to be at the start of the grid.  This
simply isn't a very good thing at tracks like Zandvoort and Monaco.

If/when there is a GPL patch this shortcoming will be addressed.

[about inverting the order of AI drivers in the .ini-file:]

As far as I've seen, this inverting doesn't have any effect to the
starting grid. When you have the inverted file, and you select 19
opponenets, the familiar names, Jim Clark etc., anyhow, will take the
first places in the grid. They just qualify best in the 'practice'...

There isn't much point in inverting the driver.ini file if you are going
to race against 19 drivers. To those of us with slower machines, who
have to race with 6 or so opponents to keep the frame rate up, it means
that Clark, Hill, et al. stay home, and we are pitted against the
slowest. (Not only is my computer slow, but so am I.)

What he's saying is that this occurs if you decide to skip practice
and go directly to the race.  I guess that's a choice you have to
weigh.  I rarely do that, so its not a problem for me.  As a
compromise, you could accelerate time in the practice, so it only
takes a few minutes, but the fast guys would still qualify and grid up
front.
