GRAN TURISMO - on your PC

by Sinj » Sun, 22 Aug 1999 04:00:00

PC racers have been having to drool over this PSX title for almost 2 years now,
but now thanks to a little $29 program called BLEEM you can play this PSX title
on your PC.  (In fact you can play a lot of PSX games on your PC - I have 106
games in my collection and 46 of them are working 100% with BLEEM right now).

Anyway - back to GT.  On my P3-500 with Viper 770 card I am able to play Gran
Turismo at 1600x1200x32bit colors at BLAZINGLY SMOOTH framerates.  The REPLAYS
are a bit jerky as this resolution but if you can settle for 1280x1024x32 then
your racing and replays are all smooth as glass.

BLEEM supports full analog control devices and I have driven GT with my Andretti
Wheel, MS Sidewinder FF wheel and my Gravis XTerminator Gamepad.  The best
controls are in this order.

GRAVIS
Andretti
Microsoft (sorry - no FF)

The only reason the Gravis beats the Andretti is because the game was designed
for a very short length of travel in the X axis.  Using a wheel offers to great
a turning distance so you really have to crank the wheel to make even modest
turns.  The analog pad on the Gravis is very precise and smooth and I have
already beaten most of my records that I set on the PSX.  The wheel is still
functional and great fun - it just takes getting used to the sensativity (or
lack thereof)

BLEEM supports full memory card saving (to your hard drive) so you can now
exchange cars over the net or save and trade replays.

Gran Turismo is without a doubt one of the best racing sims ever released and
now that it is playable on the PC at *** resolutions with full support for
your favorite controller, PC racers can now take the ULTIMATE RIDE!

Forgive me for not being able to tell whether you're joking but the
commercial Bleem supports D3D!  Not all of the PSX games will be
accelerated but any that use 3D graphics will use hardware
acceleration.  They have some great screenshots at their homepage
(www.bleem.com ?).

I tried the demo and the 3 games that I threw at it all worked
flawlessly.

I was very impressed.

Huh? He did not even include a URL to a site, so how can that be spam? Go to
bleem.com and you will see what he is talking about. Bleem is a very nice
commercial PSX emulator that keeps getting better with every patch (they are
at 1.4 right now). Several games even look better in Bleem because of D3D
support that your normal PSX game does not have.

Well for starters you can't really SPAM a newsgroup.  SPAM is a meat served only
by email.  Perhaps you meant a TROLL but even then you are wrong.   I'm just
saying that this newsgroup has been talking about Grand Turismo on the PSX for
over a year now WISHING a PC version would be released.

Well now you have the opportunity to play the PSX version on the PC and have it
look and play 5x better than it ever will on any console unit.  $30 for the
BLEEM program and another $30 for the game and you have the hottest racing sim
available on your PC.

Go to www.bleem.com for more info.

And NO - I am not affiliated with BLEEM - just a happy Grand Turismo driver.

Spam or not, can someone please confirm if Bleem really is as good as their site leads us to believe?

I'm talking (of course) in terms of Gran Turismo.  How is it going to play with my celeron 433 with 64mb RAM and a Voodoo 3 2000?  Does it support the Microsoft FF wheel??

I was kind of surprised to read that it's smooth on your pII 350 in
1600 resolution. I read other people saying that the game was very
jerky with bleem, even on higher-end systems than yours.
Comments from other people who have tried Grand Turismo with Bleem?

GRAN TURISMO - on your PC

Well, here's my -humble- opinion on the bleem!-GT combination.

I have a Cel 400, with  64 meg and a voodoo banshee. Gran Turismo is one of
the best working games on bleem for the moment. At least that is the
consensus among most bleem users (check out the forum at bleem.com for more
details).

On the level of graphics, GT looks very good on your pc in hardware
accellerated mode. The only glitch is that when you play it in D3D mode, the
brakelights don't come on, I guess/hope the bleem guys will address this in
one of the next releases. Furthermore, the game does tend to get a bit slow
when racing against the AI.

Sound is the weakest point of GT (as in most psx games run on bleem), though
much has improved since version 1.2 (that's where I got in). 80% of the time
you have a cool sounding engine, but sometimes sound totally craps up. The
music sounds best when turned off :-)

The controller-issue is another problem I would like to see solved in a next
release. A too large dead zone demands a bit of an unnatural driving style
as mentioned in one of the previous posts, i.e. driving a Mitsubishi GTO
like a GMC truck. Of course, you can always use a digital gamepad, but this
takes away much of the "driving" fun and therefore can only be seen as a
temporary solution.

Despite having to use the gamepad, and the not-always-so-good sound, bleem
and GT have already provided me with hours of fun and for me it's been worth
every $ (I payed 30$ + 15$ for DHL shipping to Europe). BTW try using bleem
with a backup copy of GT, you'll be amazed at the result. ;-)

GRAN TURISMO - on your PC

by duxnuke » Tue, 24 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Sorry, I didn't exactly mean that.
Well, I wrote that because at first, looking Sinjin's post it seemed
advertise to me. I tried the last version of Bleem! on my PII 350, 64mb RAM,
with an ATI 3d Rage Pro AGP 2X and a 3DFx Diamond Monster 3d Voodoo I. I
played Gran Turismo (I have a playstation) on the PC and there were A LOT of
bugs. First, the sound was choppy and distorted, I could not hear very well
menu musics (not race cd-musics), as they played too fast.
The graphics is not perfect. Changing driver during the game leads to a
program crash and will corrupt the sound. Some games ran better and faster
on PSEmu (It is not perfect and still very buggy on some machines but at
least you can take it for free). In my computer, Gran Turismo had better
graphics on PSEmu but less stability (sometimes hangs up the computer).
What I want to say is that 30 bucks for an unfinished emulator seems
excessive to me. They sold Bleem! fooling you that it was THE perfect
playstation emulator. What we have now is a bugged software that is not
worth the price you pay. These are my impressions. Now you can flame me...

Oh, and again, sorry for my ignorance about "spam" and for my bad english.

I tried the demo of Bleem a couple of months ago with GT and it was really
awfull. I am wondering if it has improved in this time and worth trying
again? The little bit I have tried GT it looked a very impressive game. I
seem to remember there is something on Alison Hine's site where she mentions
going and buying a Playstation purely to play it!
