Error Starting GPL...Help please...

by David Coelh » Thu, 12 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I've installed the demo version of Grand Prix Legends and when I try to run
it I get the message "GPL executed an invalid instruction in module GPL.EXE
at 0137:004ce269" (it's always this number). After browsing some messages
on the forum I unistalled DX6 and reinstalled DX5.2, but it's the same old
thing.... I've come across a FAQ that said this was a Cyrix CPU based
machines problem. Is this it? Is it fixed on the final release? Anyone with
a Cyrix processor with the same problem? Is there a patch or something? My
system is :
 6X86 P166 Cyrix CPU
64MB EDO RAM
 Tseng 6000 2MB RAM
Apocalypse 3DX 4MB RAM
 WIN95 OSR2 DirectX5.2

Thanks for your helpDavid Coelho

David,

I have exactly the same problem with my Cyrix P166+ machine.  Think I read
somewhere that this was a known problem with the demo.  Not sure if it's been
fixed in the final release though...

Sorry not to be of more help.  If anyone does have the answer to this question
I'd appreciate an answer as I want to play GPL too!

GPL (both the retail version and demo) require a Pentium CPU
instruction that is not supported on the Cyrix 6x86.  There is no fix
or work-around other than a new CPU.

Yes, probably.

I'm afraid you're out of luck. GPL needs some Pentium-specific
functions which are not present in the older Cyrix/IBM processors.

You might want to buy a K6 or a 6x86MX Cyrix processor, provided your
mainboard can accomodate them. They're relatively inexpensive and have
no probs with GPL.

You definitely can with a full install of the American version.

The North America release, yes.  But, from what I've heard the European
release requires the CD to be in place.  But, please don't quote me on
the latter.

For the European version:
maybe you can do the same trick as with Toca TourCarChampionship
There's a (illegal) patch which fakes a CD present in the drive by creating
a virtual CD-ROM player. You'll have to change some things in the registry.
http://ds.dial.pipex.com/jmhnet/toca/edit/index.shtml is where you can find
it (downloads). Great site, by the way!

It's much easier...simply find someone to mail you the gpl.exe (1.7M) from
the US version. Put it in your GPL directory, and there you go.

Thanks for mentioning this:

I thought it was Windows 95's fault again, but now I know it's my 166+ CPU

(sorry windows)

I hope for a patch also!

Does this apply to newer Cyrix processors - specifically
the MII 300, or just the older ones ?

Just the older chips, as it will work on the MX and MII.

In any case the older ones: I have a Cyrix 166+ (M1). If it also applies to
the newer CPU's is something I don't know. Anyway, I don't think so....

Windows 95 - tip:

Do you have a Logitech-mouse and
do you want to make use of the middle-mouse-button?

This is a way to make the middle-mouse-button work as a double-click:

- Start the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE)
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LOGITECH\MOUSEWARE\
  CURRENTVERSION\SERIALV\0000\DOUBLECLICK
- Change the DOUBLECLICK value from 000 to 001

The middle-mouse-button now acts as a doubleclick
