GPL D3D 7 - locked at 60Hz scan rate?

by John Cauthe » Mon, 21 Jan 2002 16:22:26

I just installed my new Samsung SyncMaster 753DF monitor and for some
reason, I can't get GPL to run at anything higher than 60 Hz.  I've got the
D3D 7 Rasterizer set to 1024x768-16, which is the same as my desktop
setting.  Yet when I try to run GPL, it reverts to 60 Hz (or so it appears
by the flickering).  Also, the title and menu screens are clearly not taking
up the screen area I'd defined in desktop.  there's a 1/2" border all the
way around.  Any clues as to what's up?  I know I was using GPL at 75 Hz in
1024 x 768 with my old GVC monitor.

Thanks,

John Cauthen

This is peculiar - normally if you use the same video mode as your desktop,
it will be the same refresh - are you sure your desktop isn't 32-bit or
something?  One of the great features of Windows XP is that you can choose
custom refresh rates in DirectX(8?) games like F12001.

Try HZTool http://hem.spray.se/doxx/

This allows you to customise refresh rates at all resolutions you may
run.

I've read that XP locks all D3D games into 60hz unless you can get out a
registry tweaker or similar, likewise openGL is stuck at 75hz.  One more
reason I've put off upgrading- so is that not true, or are refresh rates
only changeable on new games coded with DX8 in mind?

cheers

No, I'm using 16 bit color... btw, this is with Windows 98 SE.

I'll break down and buy Windows XP sooner or later.

Read on a bit... I think I've partially solved my problem at the very least.

Thanks,

Got the Hz Tool and ran it Tony... thanks!  I just made double sure that I
had a refresh rate of 85Hz with it in 1024x768x16.  It doesn't appear that
it really changed anything, but I have learned this - I believe I'm
expecting the title and menu screens to be presented in that res.  They seem
to flicker and are obviously not taking up the full desktop screen size.
I'm not sure it's supposed to though.  When I get to the track, I don't see
the flickering, so I guess I'm getting the job done there.

I can't recall now, do the menu screens flicker?  Also, do they take up the
same screen area as the desktop?  Again, I'm running Windows 98 SE

John, all the GPL menu screens are 640x480, so whatever refresh rate your adapters 640x480 res
defaults to is what its using.  The resolution you can affect is strictly for driving/replays.

The menu screens run at different resolution. With the HZ tool you can
select all the resolutions and bump them up

John,
have the same monitor.
did you install the retail monitor driver?
I had problems too that on a random basis the frequency switched to 60 Hz after
reboot or resolution canges. Found out that certain tweaking of my Geforce and
any GF-driver reinstallation paralized the monitor driver. It was still there,
but not working properly.
Just throw in the CD and reinstall.

Ah, you have the same monitor?  Cool, I've got a question for you
relating to that later.  I installed the monitor driver that came in
the package.  I believe it's dated October.  I'm away from my home PC
at the moment and can't check.

I just got the monitor on Friday and installed the driver on top of
the Geforce settings that were already there.  None of them had been
changed.  I did set the scan rate to 85 Hz for 1024x768 and 800x600.
I'll try reinstalling the monitor driver again just to ensure that I
don't have a problem of the type you encountered.

Let me ask you a question about your Samsung 753DF.  Is it possible to
get the display to fill the entire physical area of the screen?  No
matter what I do, I have about a 3/16" black border all the way around
the display.  All the monitors that I've had prior to now had the
capability of filling the entire screen area.  Is this just a
characteristic of this monitor?

Thanks,

John Cauthen

John,
no prob with the screen here. I can stretch the picture even beyong the border.
Seems that the factory adjustment of yours is not ok.
