GPL & XP - defaulting to software 3d?

by Rand » Tue, 30 Oct 2001 03:20:57

I havent seen a prior post on this.  I upgraded to XP Pro edition.
Everything works okay except GPL defaults to software 3d mode & says
Im missing a file called redline.dll.  Anyone else had this problem at
all?  If so, whats the fix?

  Redline is the api for Rendition video cards.  For some reason your cfg
file seems messed up.  It thinks you have a Rendition card instead of
whatever you have.   So try poking around the core.ini and find the
following lines:

[ Direct3D7 ]
D3DDevice = 0

change that to

[ Direct3D7 ]
D3DDevice = 1

you should then be able to boot to d3d(provided you've added that patch) and
then choose whatever 3d rasterizer you want.

Thanks for the quick response.

I looked in the core.ini and saw no lines at all that had any of that
in them.  BTW, I have a Voodoo Banshee card (if that matters).  Should
I add that line? then?

The Voodoo Banshee would probably not be supported very under XP as as you
know 3DFX do not exist any more... I think the reason why you get the error
is that the standard XP Banshee drivers only support Direct3D, not Glide
which is what you probably used under Win9x. You could try running the
Direct3D patch from www.papy.com, but I would think about buying a newer
graphics card (non 3DFX) and run GPL in Direct3D mode under WinXP or go back
to Win9x and run Glide.

You could be adventurous and try the Windows 2000 beta Banshee drivers which
should work under Windows XP.

Good luck but as I said, I would think about upgrading to a newer card.

Cheers,
Les.

This site has Banshee GLIDE drivers for 2K, they don't seem to have any for
XP, but the rest of the 3DFX line seems covered at the site for XP.

I don't remember exactly, but maybe others will.  Wasn't there something
that you had to do to get the Banshee card to work with GPL that you didn't
have to do with the other video cards?

Yep, I think you had to run the Glide'o'matic patch by George Smiley...
