Success with F1RS and 3D sound patch?

by Alan Donalds » Tue, 19 May 1998 04:00:00

Has anyone had a complete success using the F1RS DirectX Sound Patch
(soundpatch2.exe) with a 3D soundcard?

I bought the Creative SoundBlaster PCI64 this weekend, and installed
in my system (P-II 300MHz, 64MB RAM, Orchid Righteous 3D-II).  The
card installed ok and passes its own self-tests, including the 3D
sound test with four speakers.  I got this particular card because of
the good luck I've had with other SoundBlaster soundcards, and also
because it supports four speakers.

However, when I installed the soundpatch2.exe patch over F1RS and
patch 1.09, I saw these problems:

* Engine revving by itself while on the starting grid;
* Front wheels made slight turns by themselves, while on the grid and
while driving.  If I was going in a straight line, I'd suddenly jump
over to one side by a few feet, then jump back, then jump to the other
side, then back, etc.

I then reinstalled F1RS and patch 1.09, and did not install
soundpatch2.exe. These problems were still there.

So, it looked like there was some kind of "interference" somewhere
with the PCI64 soundcard, my TSW wheel/pedal combo, and F1RS.  I also
tried using a CH Gamecard Automatic 3 dedicated gamecard instead of
the gameport on the PCI64 soundcard, but saw the same problems.

So, I removed the PCI64 and put my original soundcard (AWE64 Value)
back in, reinstalled F1RS and patch 1.09, plugged the TSW into the
AWE64's gameport, and the problem was gone.

Sorry for the long post, but I'd appreciate any replies about specific
3D sound cards that you've found work flawlessly with soundpatch2.exe.
UbiSoft's patch page mentions a number of 3D sound cards that you
"must have", such as the Diamond Multimedia Monster Sound, but I've
seen a post from someone who has that card and the patch didn't work
for him, either.

TIA,

Dave
