I've been running a Monster M80 for about 3 weeks. I originally had it in a
200mmx machine with a V2 (M3d). The card was only OK on that machine with
F1RS w/3d sound, due mostly to extreme distortion and dropouts when there
were several other cars around. With just one or two cars it was great.
I got a Dell P2-400 machine last week, put the M80 and the Monster 2 in it,
and now words can't adequately describe what the 3D sound and V2 do for
F1RS. If you have a fast P2, I'd say the change to a 3D card of some stripe
would be well worth the money. There are very distinct volume and
directional cues that weren't even close to being present with the AWE32 I
upgraded from. I'm not so sure about a regular pentium, though, if your
sole interest is F1RS. But Greg, I recognize you from flight sims, and the
M80 made a quite noticeable difference in F-15's frame rate when I still had
the 200mmx. The PCI bus, you know, as well as the digital port. I haven't
noticed any of the "nervousness" that some have reported with the M80 port.
And of course, the setup is also great with the 400. Before you buy, read
the article about 3D sound cards at www.combatsim.com. If I had had the
info in that article 3 weeks ago, I might not have bought the M80.
