T2 Frame Rate Problem

T2 Frame Rate Problem

by Howard Fu » Sun, 16 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hi all,
I'm having a problem that I hope someone here can give me an answer
for.  I'm trying to use my T2 to play ICR2 and Nascar Racing, but after
about 5 minutes worth of lapping in either game, the calibration goes out
the window, and the frame rate in the game drops down to what must be
single digits. It becomes impossible at this point to recalibrate the
wheel or pedals, (they won't stay calibrated even if you go out to the
menu). If you exit the games, and then rerun them the problem again
occurs, although it takes place immediately, not with a few minute
delay. Here is my hardware setup....  I'm using a Winbook DX100
(laptop) with 16 meg Ram, hooked into a docking station with a
Thrustmaster ACM game card. For controls I'm using the T2.  Is my problem
the fact that I'm running it on a laptop? It seems like it could be
heatdrift, but I thought the adjustable speed game card was supposed to
take care of that?  Anyway, if anyone could point me in the right
direction I would appreciate it.     Thanks, Howard

It sounds to me like your notebook's power management software is kicking
in (even though you are connected to a docking station). Power management
software generally works similar to a screen saver; if there is no
keyboard or mouse activity after a preset amount of time, the computer
cuts the clock rate of the system to conserve power. Joystick activity
doesn't count.

Sounds very much like your APM power saving modes are cutting in and
dropping the cpu speed - guaranteed to ruin your calibration and chop
the frame rate. It happens because the bios doesn't monitor the
joystick port for activity, so it sees the machine as idle.

Try turning off the power saving modes from your bios. Ideally, you
should have a setting for 'disable APM when docked', but I'm not
familiar with your machine.

Regards,
James.
