The future of Sims

How long do you guys think it will be before the whole car is modeled in a
sim?  By this I mean that all parts are made for the car and assembled in
the sim just like in real life.  From this, horsepower figures and friction
levels and all of that stuff won't be held in a text file, but the computer
will model, real time, all of the physics.  Atmospheric conditions will
determine the amount of air entering the engine and the amount of power each
fire of the spark plug will make.  And wind gusts will push the car in
various directions while changing the aerodynamic balance of the car.  The
whole world will be modeled and the physics will be based on the same real
world rules as we must abide by.  So how many years until this?  Just wanted
to throw out a topic of discussion.

Easy. I programed that 10 years ago on a BBC micro! I was only 9 :o)

The question isnt when will the sim be developed but when will the hardware
necessary to run it be available.  GPL alone without weather and wind
conditions is very CPU intensive.  Maybe by the time we see P5 or 6 then this
might come into reality.  Im guessing about 7-10 years.  Though technology is
advancing everyday so it could be alot sooner than that.  Id like to hear what
the more educated in this department think cause "I ain't no programmer".

Not soon enough. :)

But I think a year or 2.
I just hope the sim's of 2000 and beyond model real time aerodynamic's.
That would be cool becuase then you could design your own car
shape,wings,etc.. and it would react like it would in real life. That
would be something. Then having a Built in wind tunnel(ie. Grand Prix
Manager) in the game to test your designs then throw them on the track.
Someone wake me up. :)

A Unlimited Racing Series where oversized barge boards are Legal :)

I believe that the Drag Racing Sim "Burn Out" had a very close
similarity to the engine setup you describe.  If I remember right, you
had to choose the intake and exhaust valve sizes, carburetor throat
sizes and needles with in the carb's. Piston stroke, ect..  Then there
was a graph to show the engine performance... torque, HP, spark
retardation, and a few other lines I don't remember what they were.

So, there's the possibility of combining that, with the suspension feel
of GPL.  Now we need variable'ing air flow dynamics calculated.

IMHO, the future of car sims lies in improving the NET.  GPL's and others
bandwith requirements are too much for the Internet to handle sometimes.

Mike,

YOU RACE F3!!  Why would you care about these things??   Except accurate
training wheels and carb governors?   <VBG> ;)

Nice question - but a more realistic version of the question would be:
"How long do you guys think it will be before the marketing
and management types can be convinced that this is a financially
viable course to take?" because that's almost certainly going to be a
longer time than it takes for technology to reach a point where this
is possible! :)

Yes good point.  Us die hard fans will never get enough because those
corporate types have to make money.  Why don't they think of us? WHY? hehe.
Oh well, we will just have to wait until everyone catches up.

Well this is taking into effect that corporate advertising and $$$ is
getting in the way of production.

I can't wait till then.  Sorta like "real world" applications to CFD
(computational fluid dynamics).  Design your cars (or change them around)
and feel the effects.  F1 teams on the computer.  All governed by the same
general rules but everyone could make their own cars (within the rules) and
race it.  Damn I can't wait.
