OT DX9, and IE6

Guys,

I need DX9 and IE6 installed on my pc at home. It's not connected to the
internet, and even if I went to all the trouble of doing that I've only got
a normal phone line, so it would take ages to do the download.

I went to Microsoft's site, in the hope of downloading the files with my
work machine (100mbps), but you can only download a small setup file, and it
seems that it does the upgrade live over the internet.

This just isn't on when you live in the sticks, like I do.

Does anyone know where I can download all I need, so I can burn them onto a
CD and install at my leisure at home?

Thanks.

R.

install the net provider..

do d/ls and bring box home.

Richard, I can mail you a CD with the files on if you like.
Alternatively, most PC mag cover disks have the latest versions on them,
though I'm sure if you dig around they are somewhere on the microsoft site.

for IE6, d/l the small setup file from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/downloa...
run the setup, select "minimal/custom install". Pick "Advanced" from the
next screen. Then select "download only". This will leave you with the full
IE6 which you can burn and install at home

IE 6.0 (pre SP1) is the best you find online. ~77MB download
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/6.0

If you need the security features of SP1 then the MS link is the way to
go.

Do a google search for the DX9 "Redistributable".  It does exist.

IE6 is a bit more difficult, but there IS a way.  I think it's on the
corporate download site, but if you have access to a Windows 9x machine
(this will not work with Win2K or XP machines), you can do this...

It's been a while, so my instructions might be sketchy...

With the Win9x machine, go to the IE site.  Download the snippit-installer
onto this machine.

Create a folder on the Win9x machine called "MSIE 6 All OS"

Run the snippit installer.

When you come to the options screen, you want to go to advanced options, or
whatever they call it.  Again, it's been a while.

Choose the "Download Only" option, and select all of the OS's near the
bottom (might as well get them all).

Point it to the "MSIE 6 All OS" folder you created on the desktop.

Start the download.

When you are done, you will have a (mostly) complete offline MSIE 6
installer for all OS's in that folder.

Be advised, even with the entire thing downloaded, you almost always still
need an internet connection because some little piece of code has changed
and it wants to go out to the net and grab it.

There are also full MSIE 6 installers on the TechNet CD's if you have access
to them, and it may also exist on the corporate download site at MS.
Unfortunately, I forget the url because I get it on TechNet monthly and
haven't had to use it in a long time.

This only works if your host is Win9x.  It won't work (the option isn't
presented) if the host is a 2K or XP system.

Don't forget to select all the OS's you need at the bottom of the option
screen, and set up a target folder before you run it.

Actually, I think 5.01 was the fastest, most stable version of IE :)

I wish I could install it in XP.  I absolutley despise IE6.

Thanks Guys.

I got the redistributable DX9a.

Is it worth putting DX9 on, with a GF2, or should I wait 'till I get a 9600
Radeon?

As for IE, someone pointed me at this - it works whatever your os...
