GPL: Framerate with Voodoo1?

by Stefan Soderhol » Fri, 08 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I own a TNT-card, and I'm getting tired of waiting for an Open-GL driver
from Riva and a ogl-patch from papy that gives me at least 30 fps in
***pitview. I have a PII 450, so what framerate could I aspect with a
V1, considering the upcoming of V3 and the excellence of TNT in other
games, I would be happy with a V1 if it gives me over 30 fps and handles
at least 800x600, so please let me know what I need to get fps in GPL.

To run 800x600 with 36fps, you need a Voodoo2 card.  If you get a V1,
stick with 640x480.

You'll have to turn off details (mirrors, race groove (??)) with a V1,
even with a fast processor (I have a Celeron 333). I wouldn't
recommend running GPL in 800x600 with a V1, although it would be
possible. But framerate drops drastically, it's just too much for the
old V1. But in 640x480 it gives you 36 fps in most situations, except
during races (~15 fps at the start, then 25-30 fps).

With a V2, you can turn on everything (even the mirrors), and get
higher framerates in a higher resolution (800x600 is just fine). I
wouldn't recommend 1024x768, too. I'd buy a Voodoo2, they're rather
cheap now.

GPL: Framerate with Voodoo1?

I have a PII 450 also and installed my old Voodoo1 as opposed to my Voodoo2
just to see what the frame rate would be. Well I can get 36fps out of the
voodoo1. So if you want to save some cash and really only want the voodoo
for GPL then I say pick it up and start enjoying GPL :)

If it's just a matter of getting 36fps, the V1 can do that; however,
I found it (or was it my machine P2/333) to slow down with *lots*
of cars and the Monaco tunnel.

GPL: Framerate with Voodoo1?

by Iain Mille » Fri, 08 Jan 1999 04:00:00

have you tweaked yr core.ini...someone here can tell you what to do with it
I'm sure...but key thing is to reduce the refresh in the Mirrors....

mine is as follows

[ Int Profile Values ]
value0 = OpenGL:TossHighestMip:0         ; do not change
value1 = OpenGL:MipFiltering:0                ; do not change
value2 = OpenGL:MirrorsEvery:0                ; do not change

[ OpenGL ]
TossHighestMip = 1                       ;
MipFiltering = 2                        ;
MirrorsEvery = 4                        ;

This slows down the refresh in the mirrors but they are still useable & I am
getting solid 36fps in practice & high 20's when there are lots of other
cars about. running 19 cars & ALL detail to the max in 1024x768

PC is a PII 350 overclocked to 392 (112 on the mobo) with a Diamond Viper
550 - latest Diamond drivers. If you have another TNT based card you could
also try the reference drivers available on the NVidea website.

c-ya,

Iain

GPL: Framerate with Voodoo1?

by kieran kirkpatric » Sat, 09 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I own a Celeron 300A o/c to 464 and a CL TNT and i get 36fps in***pit mode
all the time. The way to do this is to download the opengl patch from papy,
install that then you have to edit your core.ini file which is found in the
sierra\gpl\ folder. This is how mine looks like

[ Int Profile Values ]
value0 = OpenGL:TossHighestMip:0         ; do not change
value1 = OpenGL:MipFiltering:0                ; do not change
value2 = OpenGL:MirrorsEvery:0                ; do not change

[ OpenGL ]
TossHighestMip = 0                       ;
MipFiltering = 4                        ;
MirrorsEvery = 4                        ;

It is the MirrorsEvery=4 that will drastically increase your fps in***pit
mode. basically it slows down the refresh rate of the mirrors which means
they look lagged but***pit view is very smooth.

Hope this helps !

btw you can only get 640x480 with a V1 card.

No, you can use 800x600 because GPL doesn't use z-buffering, but IMHO
it's too slow.

it is about 18-20 fps at 800x600.  Stays at 36 fps with all-on at 640x480.
