Just saw the V8 Bathurst 1000 on SV excellent.  First time I've seen Mt.
Panorama after driving and loving it in GPL,SCGT and TOCA 3 (refuse to use
the ludicrous Jarret&Labonte name they gave it over here)

Any way I'm a bit confused (I know that's fairly easy to do) so if the
Aussies out there could help me.

Is there two Bathurst 1000? The AMP Super-Tourers and the V8?  And if so
which is a bigger deal and the historically pure one?  I know there is the
indigenous V8's and a Supertouring Championship, but which is bigger or more
respected?  And do they run at the same time head to head.  And do the some
drivers compete in both, or are there defections and acrimony like CART-IRL?
And what's the prospect of ST now the rest of the world is sort of moving
away from them?

Here's a rough answer -

There used to be only 1 Bathurst which was on the 1st Weekend in October,
but then a storm blew up over TV rights, Channel 10 had & still do have the
rights to V8 Supercars, but channel 7 still had the rights to Bathurst.
So then there were 2, fortunately the 2 litre super  tourers died in the
arse a few years ago and now there's only the V8 Supercars, which, was
always the bigger and better format in terms of crowds & TV coverage

You bet! I was watching the same program on Speedvision yesterday...
Those are kewl cars (montrous V8). They were really flying on the track.
Is it just me or was the track really narrow at some points? I've seen
other V8 (AVESCO?) races and some are even worse than Bathurst.

Anyways, it looks like a cross between NASCAR stock cars and Motorola
cup cars...

One thing to add though, the Super Tourer race is actually the
official "Bathurst 1000" and the winner is the one who goes down in
the history books as winning Bathurst. This is on paper only though,
since the heart and soul of Australia lies with the V8 Supercars.

Also, the STs are really pathetic now and virtually dead. BMW and Audi
took off, it was never really popular though. They didn't even run a
1000km race last year, only 700 or so for some stupid reason.

As far as international drivers go, quite a few make their way over
for the V8 race, although I can't recall who was in the last one :o
Pedro Lamy is supposed to be racing full time next year I believe.

No, the STs didn't run at Bathurst at all last year (2001), you're
thinking of the year before.

Most lovers of motorsport in Australia are caught up in the perenial battle
of Holden (GMH) v's Ford.  Generally if you've always been a Ford or Holden
lover then thats the way it stays and whoever wins Bathurst has the bragging
rights for a year.

I've always favoured the big Ford V8's and my daughter the Holden Commodores
(who unfortunately for me won this year) and it was her turn to give me a
hard time about Holden's victory.

EA are releasing shortly "V8 Challenge" (only in Australia I understand)
which will be all about Holden v Ford.  It will include the Bathurst track.
I have even seen it said that there will be one box with a Commodore on it
as the feature and another with a Ford.  Just goes to show how the rivalry
exists.

Hope this helps.

Well being hte person who did the Bathurst For GPL Release a little while
ago now!   The track that I did in GPL is not the same track that you see
them driving on today, yes its the Same track, but its changed. the addition
of the chase is one huge factor. the new pits, wider track and many more
things..

If you are looking for a good detailed video collection I can only opint you
in the same direction I found my info and that is to get "The Great Race"
Volumes 1 thought to current. you'll find they go right back the the
begining, Which was infact at Phillip Island in Victoria, and moving to
Bathurst in 62 I think (getting late here).

The race was run in class' and the feild actually started at different times
for the first few years. the overall winner was not even considered at the
time the class winner was the big deal back then. In the late 60's they
introduced an outright winner being the team that completed the most laps
and was able to complete a final lap. (that's why the big deal over Jim
Richards win in 79(? not sure oif year). Who'll ever forget those imortal

has gone down in the history books as the sorest winner in history.

IT was not long after this that they started get the the bigger and faster
cars into the races to be the outright winner and a purse was being offered
for the first one home.

Here's a little know fact that a VW beatle was the first outright winner of
Bathurst (don't remember the year) but he just beat a mini home they went at
it for like 30 laps VW lead down the straight mini lead over the top.

anyway I'm sure I've said enough to get holwed down so lets leave it at
that! I'm not going to look up my facts most of it is video anyway. and it
too late!

I can only say that the V8's will always be the kings of the mountain.

As far as witch is the official race yeah I think it has gone to the 2 litre
jap crap...

And there is an update coming for bathurst for those who are interested...

I am not going to hold my breath on V8 Challenge being a wonderfull thing,
nor am I going to stop from breathing over the thought of codemasters doing
a V8 racer either.

I for one hope and still have fath that The long awaited WSC will be the
savour of our beloved sport, on the mountain.

But Gee I don't know how long I can wait.. I might just have too go out fine
an engine and do it myself!

any idea's maybe somebody out there has just the right engine for me!

heheh maybe the Q3 engine will do it?  might be a computer killer though!

Wow. That's completely different to how I remember it.

Wasn't it 1992? when Richards was driving the turbo Skyline when
a deluge of rain hit the mountain which caused roughly half the field to
spin off.

A number of cars had spun off coming up to conrod straight, including
the leader at the time, Richards.

The race was then called off, but Johnson had overtaken Richards after
the spin and completed the lap, yet Richards was handed the win.

The 'You're all a pack of arseholes' were to the crowd who, when
Richards stood on the dias had been booed by the whole crowd and
objects thrown at him. If anything, he was rather polite considering
the circumstances! Apart from the fact it was Johnson (possibly the
unluckiest man to ever race around Mt Panorama) who was robbed of the
win, but the Skyline was creaming everything that year. It was also
the last year of 'production' (sic) cars racing Bathurst and was
and has been just V8's that have run (in what I consider the great
race anyways, not those 2 litre rice machines they drive around there
a few weeks before the V8's)

Cheers,
Rod.

From memory, I think he called them "***s".  I agree with him.

Are you sure about that?  Outright winner in 1963 was Harry Firth/Bob Jane
in a Cortina GT.  A VW won class A, but was 14 laps behind the outright
winner.
