GP2 AT COMPUTER SHOW

Hi,

I went to the Home Computer Show, which is now on in Sydney. To my suprise
they had a GP2 beta version on display on a huge screen.. with a fake
Ferrari fitted with some sort of pedal, and wheel controls. No-one apart
from the exhibitors were able to play it, but however I got a long look at
the game. It looks awesome. As for the frame rate, well the game was running
on a P120 with 16MB RAM and with everything on in SVGA it seemed to play OK,
but not great. But with sky and track textures off it ran really well. I
talked to the guy there and he said that "there has been many release dates
floating around, but the game will definately be out by August". The car's
reactions to hitting the curb looked great as well. So if your in Sydney,
go to the Darling Harbour Convention Centre and check it out!

Also, while there I saw the Playstation F1 game, and it is NO comparison to
GP2! It looks like a crappy arcade game, with graphics are probably just
up to the GP2 VGA standard. It looks like Destruction Derby but with an F1
theme.

I agree it looked good but I'm not sure about the guy demonstating it
(on Saturday atleast). He really didn't seem to have much idea - I
think I'd believe the dates flying around in this group more than
August from him!
He said Microprosse had just given them 2 cds (yes it comes on 2 cds)
and asked them to demonstate it. He didn't get any instructions or
anything.
The way he talked about 'they' (being Microprose or its reps) he isn't
too close to the guys who matter.

I saw it also, there were two guys at the stand; one (George) dressed in
red wearing a ferrari cap and gloves; the other plain dressed.

I thought I heard the plain dressed guy say  it was a Pentium 150
overclocked to 180. I watched George drive Barcelona in VGA which looked
like full detail, Sky was on etc and it was doing about 25fps and looked
awesome especially the mirror detail. It was very smooth as the guy
tailgated a car along the main straight.

SVGA did look a bit disappointing, at a rough guess I'd say it was about
18fps with most detail except Sky and track.

IMO SVGA didn't look a whole lot better than the VGA, its not like the
difference between ICR2 VGA and SVGA.

One thing I noticed was that the AI seems not finished as they were
crashing all the time, lots of computer cars were out of the race on the
first lap.

I don't think it was the latest beta because:
a) AI cars crashing too much
b) there wasn't any smoke from the cars
c) no wheels locking up
d) No sign of flying sand when coming off into the kitty litter, but
the bouncing effect is very nice.

A release date of August was also given. George also hinted that it
might be a little before then. (I guess early July for the UK people)

I'd swear I heard him (George) say P120 16MB! Theres no way it would be
running like that on a P150!

No one was ever saying it was the latest beta, it looked like a  pretty
early one aswell. Mainly cause all the latest screenshots Ive seen looked
different to this version. This looked more like the version that Hyper
reviewed back in February.

Don't you believe it, a P150 is a pretty poor chip. It will run best on
a P133 or P166, not a 120, 150 or 180.

Cheers!

There's actually nothing wrong with a 150 at all.  In fact, I guarantee you it's
exactly the same processor as a 166.  Only thing that's wrong with it is that it
has an external bus speed of 60 mhz instead of 66.  I'm sure that's what you
intended to say, but you kind of made it sound like it was not a good processor
in and of itself, when in fact it's just like all the other P54C type Pentiums.

The problem with all this is that a the diff between P180 and P133 = 5%
