N2002.... Sensation of Speed Missing....

I was playing N2002 and its a great game.   One thing I noticed was the
sensation of speed
is missing from both Daytona as well as Taladega.   What really surprised me
was that it was
not missing at all in the review mirror shot.   In the mirror it looks like
you are going 200mph but
out the front window feels and looks like a turtle.. I hope they address
this in N2003...

I agree, in the mean time try Coke-Cola and you'll feel speed.

I know its a little different, but the Midtown Madness series also somewhat
lacks the feeling of speed while blasting down the streets. That is, until
you hit the "widescreen" option key. Then the sense of speed seems to
double. Dunno how feasable that view would be in Nascar though. Just a silly
thought :)

Probably because of the new plate package in 2002 release. These cars feel
like sludge and the big boys look like they are sludgin along as well. IMO
the plate tracks have always felt slow. Try running Coca Cola and see if it
gives you the same sensation or lack of, since it is a BIG yet unrestricted
track.

The drivers say that Daytona/Talladega do not have much of a sensation of speed
compared to any of the other tracks because of the sheer size and ease of
driving.  Atlanta is supposed to have the greatest sensation of speed, and it
does feel damn fast even in N2002 to me.  :)

I think this is an optical illusion, having to do with the fact that the
track
image (in the case of Daytona and Dega) remains static in your field of vision
(even though you are zipping down it at 200 MPH).  I have managed to crank
it up to 280 at Zenjoltis (fantasy track) by setting the temperature real low,
but since that track is so freakin' wide even at that speed it just seems like
you
are in cruise control at 55 on the highway...
Still, you'd think there would be some trick Papy could do that would make
it seem faster.

I wonder how much of it is due to being a plate track. I know IRL(tm)
when I used to take my GT out for a drive, the sensation of speed was
lacking severley, whereas when I took my road car out, at the same
speed, my daily driver looked like it was doing at least 20ks quicker
than the GT.

Now, it was suggested to me that it was the audible cue that was mostly

it was doing alot more work and hence the audible cue was giving the
impression that my speed was faster.

Tally and Dega do look slow and I think it's due to the wide straights
and lack of audible cues.

Cheers,
Rod.

Probably because of the wider persepctive in the rearview mirror.  If
you drive your street car at 70mph on the highway and keep your head
perfectly still and look straight ahead you'll be amazed at how slowly
the road is moving, but if you look to the sides it will seem like
you're moving at a pretty good clip.  Since racing sims lack
peripheral vision, it seems like you're going a lot slower than you
really are.  I'm not sure how that could be fixed without creating a
perspective that is difficult to gauge distance from.  If it were
possible to use 3 monitors with the left and right ones showing the
"look left" and "look right" views I think you'd get a really good
impression of speed.

That's because Nascar has turned the cars into Bricks, and NR 2002 emulates
this faithfully.

You don't sense speed because there isn't any :)

  Actually, it's the opposite :)
