GP2: Celeron or PII-cpu????

by Erik van Duij » Sun, 31 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi, can anyone point out to me which processor is better/which has a
better price-performance value: the PII or the Celeron.

For instance: when I want a PII-450-cpu, can this be compared to an
equal-in-speed cpu from the Celeron-range (if needed an overclocked
one). Because Celerons are much cheaper than PII's, I want to know the
speed difference between these cpu's, especially with GP2.

Thanks!!!!

GP2: Celeron or PII-cpu????

I haven't directly compared a PII-xxx to a Celeron running at xxx, but have
read a few reviews with game framerate comparisons.  In virtually all, an
equivalently clocked Celeron ran games at the same speed, within a percent or
so, as compared to the PII.  However, there's always the chance that some
particular title may more strongly benefit from the PII's larger L2 cache than
the C's faster one.  Oh, of course, get the 300A with the L2 cache.

Once one consideres prices, an OC'd (if you can) Celeron is a blowout winner
compared to a PII.

As to GP2, here's what I get in PO when I start a Monaco race in 6th with
absolutely all details on and framerate (I believe) at 16 fps:

Hi Erik.  The Celeron is definitely the better value, as long as you don't mind
OC'ing it.  A 300A at 450 benchmarks basically equal to a PII450; a bit better
in *** and a bit worse in biz-apps, but neither enough to notice.  The
problem is that the 300A supply is drying up, especially the retail versions
that tend to OC more reliably.  The newer 366 and 400 versions are basically
the same but with different locked multipliers (300A=4.5, 366A=5.5, and
400a=6.0).  This affects how well they will OC, and what bus speed you'll need
to do it, which can impact your peripherals.  Using a motherboard like an Abit
BH6 that allows jumperless settings for bus speed/mulitplier/cpu voltage will
help you get the most out of your cpu, whichever you choose.

Cheers,

Steve B.

This is off-topic, but I installed FastVid
http://www.fastgraphics.com/fastvid.html "a small utility which enables
write posting and write combining. Running FastVid on Pentium Pro or Pentium
II systems can improve the CPU to PCI / AGP data transfer rate".  It only
helps speed up DOS games.

PII 450, 128MB, STB TNT video
Tested with GP2 by watching a car start in 6th from in-car view, all details
on, framerate set to max (25.3+ fps):  Occupancy went from 130% to 120%
(about an average of 10% lower throughout lap).

Small correction:

Actually, it wasn't with all details (textures) on, but just the major ones
(tracks, cars, hills, one other).  But I just tried with everything on and the
