GP2 & 400 PII

Hi Everybody,

Has anyone played GP2 on a 400 mhz PII yet?  How are the frame rates?
I am in the market for a new computer and it all depends on if a 400 mhz
PII can run GP2 with all of the details on.  Or I'll just wait untill
the 450 mhz chip comes out.

Regards,
Ralph

I've heard it's all programmed into the code.  It's just not optimized for
today's machines.  A faster computer won't likely make a difference.
I know I haven't noticed much of one.  (This is all what I've heard around
the net and talking to others too).  On a similar end, A-10 Cuba runs great
on PC's, but on Mac's which is the platform the A-10 series started on, if
you get a G750 (their fastests machines are the G models), it still will run
slow because of the way the code was written.  It's just outdated that's
all.

I'm running a PII 400 with 64MB RAM and an 8MB ATI RAGE Pro. With sky
textures turned off but everything else on and FPS at maximum, processor
occupancy stays below 100% on all tracks except Monaco, with a slight
slowdown at the start and when you enter the gravel. With a couple of mirror
textures turned off, then no slowdowns at all.

I can live without clouds in the sky or mirrors so would say go for it.

With a 12MB Voodoo2 GPL looks smooth also....

Never heard such bullshit...

A PII 400 runs it MUCH better than a P200. A friend tested it and got 25fps full
detail under 100% except at the start at Monaco and when using external
viewpoints and when there's a lot of smoke.

Yes, frame rates around 25-26 with all details on.

This is a joke, isn't it ?? Would be a shame if a 3 year-old game wouldn't
run on a PII 400 with all details :-/

Tststs...but BTW: why do you want to play GP II when there's F1RS. This
game kicks ass and runs VERY smooth with ALL (!!!) details on my AMD K6
200/w Monster 3D ;-)

Also, man mailt sich...

I have a PII-400, 256 meg ram, 3DFX card and the  New Matrox G200 AGP
card and with everything turned on it runs fine. Only Monaco has a
slight glitch on turn 1 at the start with all cars running.

I run it on a Dell PII 350 mhz, 64 MB.  It run's great with all details on.
Formerly ran it on a 166 non MMX.  There just is a world of difference.

My advise : save a bit with the 350 compared with the 400, and get
a Voodoo2 for 3dfx specific games. It won't matter in GP2

It runs just fine on such a system. And if you even disable "sky"(who cares
if there are clouds or not?) it runs like hell!

Although I turn it off to get the performance boost, I find it a shame.
The sky definitely does add something to the atmosphere, even without
weather effects.  For one thing, the motion of the sky relative to the
observer enhances the perception of motion.  Also, it looks nice.
It's a shame that they couldn't at least use a simple gradated fill
for the sky, like they used to in the old flight sims, going from blue
at the top to almost grey at the horizon.  Much more realistic looking,
and almost no effort to implement.  The blank blue sky in GP2 and
ICR2 (non rendition) looks like a piece of cardboard.

and then Jo Helson said

and now I say....

Because GP2 is a purely processor intensive game, graphics cards and MMX
(not around when they made it) don't affect it. Therefore it should
follow that a PII400 should run it at just over double the speed of a
P200 (PII has a slightly better architecture but this doesn't help
much).

So if you play it on a PII 333 and see a PO of 200% you should be OK
with a PII 666 :-)

Me? - I'm still playing it on a CxPR166+ so spare a thought....

I was running at Spa today, with details at medium and the white puffy
clouds scattered throughout the sky were nice to look at-must be the
reason I was spinning so often.
