GPL 1.1 keeps crashing....

by Neil Evere » Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I installed the 1.1 patch this week, and ever since then you can almost
guarantee that GPL will crash with an illegal operation whenever I
play.  This only tends to happen after a few minutes, and happens more
frequently if I'm racing the AI cars rather than practising.  I had been
running my K6-2 300 at 372, so dropped to 350 which had ALWAYS been
stable.  It still crashed.  So I tried 336 and it STILL crashed.  Hmmm.
Only seems to be GPL that has problems, and it is always the same
illegal operation message that I get.  Any theories?  Before the patch I
had things running very stable in GPL.  I use George Smileys glide patch
to lower mirror refresh.  Also, I did a complete reinstall of GPL before
applying the patch.  I think the next step is to go back to 1.0 and see
if that is stable, then I'll know that it is defintely 1.1 causing the
probs.....

TIA

Did you patch a _clean_ GPL 1.0? I had the same problem and after I
deleted the new engine-sounds which I had put in the sounds-folder,
everything was fine again.
Hope that helps ...

I do have new sounds in the sounds folder.  I'll take them out and see if that
makes a difference!

That's odd - I have a load of new sounds as well, and I had no problem
with GPL 1.1 (well it didn't crash, anyway!).

I haven't put in the patch that allows each car to have its own sound -
maybe that's what causes the problem?

I have different sounds for all cars (not the original sounds) use an older
driver.ini and gpl_ai.ini. I also use the Brands Hatch track with GPL1.1 and
everything works well it seems like...
Another funny thing is that the profiler which I use for the LWFF is
supposed to only work with DirectX5.2+, but I'm pretty sure I only use
DirectX5 and the LWFF seems to work fine.

Removing the sound files from the sound folder did not help.  Going back to 1.0
was still crashing, so it seems it was not to do with the patch at all.  I had
been away on holiday for 2 weeks.  Everything was fine before I went, now I've
had to back off the clock speed of the CPU to get GPL stable........

I couldn't agree more!  Maybe it's time for a faster CPU.....

Thanks for the help anyway guys.
