N4: Running with EAX sound?

by Mick » Tue, 11 Dec 2001 02:33:34

Hey,
Does anyone know what steps you need to take to run Nascar 4 with EAX
sound? Is it just as simple as selecting the EAX driver and 3D box in
the "options" menu? Or do you need to do something with your sound
card/eax program? Oh, and is it worth it? Can you tell a difference from
the other driver choices in the game? I have the 3D box checked, and
have tried all 3 of the Driver choices: Direct Sound, A3D, and EAX.. But
can't tell any difference in the game..
Sound System Specs:
Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1 with Sound Blaster Surround Speakers
w/sub..
Thanks for any information on this subject, Mick

I only changed the settings in N4. I cannot tell difference between
other two, but I can clearly tell that EAX is better than that two. Tire
squek is much clearer with EAX. And overall sound is better. I tried
it also in another games, and EAX is clearly the winner, IMHO.
I have SB Live! Value and Cambridge Soundworks DeskTop
Thratre 5.1 DTT2200 speakers. It could be because of speakers,
though. I just noticed that Cambridge Soundworks is in some kind of
association with Creative Technology. I also noticed sign EAX on
subwoofer. And they say that speakers are optimized for SB Live!.

All you need to do is select eax in N4 sound options, as long as you have a
sound card that supports eax like the Live that you have.
I can tell some difference, however I am running the Klipsch ProMedia's with
4 speakers and sub.

With EAX you should be able to run with 24 sounds and no problems.  That
in itself should be a good enough difference :)

Jason.
SBLive! Value.

Try unchecking the 3d sound when you use EAX - I think the 3d sound is only
intended for those running with 2 speakers.  Can anyone confirm?

3D sound gives positional audio which is best with 4 speaker setup, although
it will still work with 2.  It provides positional sounds so you can hear
when a car is on your right rear for example.
It does eat up resources though on slower PCs.

Yea, I can tell where the opponents car is by the sound in the different
speakers. And I have the max number of sounds enabled too, with no
problems.. It just sounds about the same, no matter which -driver- I
choose.. They all sound good, I just thought EAX would make a huge
difference.. I should do a more extensive test.. I just clicked each
driver (A3D, EAX, Direct) and hopped back in the car for a few seconds..
The "Creative" sound control center/panel/whatever has some EAX "enable"
feature, that asks if you want it to load up every time windows is
started.. I choose no, cause I didn't want it to chew up resources when
I wasn't using it. So that's why I asked if you had to do anything
besides pick the EAX driver, before it would work.. You can assign a
game's .exe to the EAX console and use different sound profiles and all
kinds of crap. Does anyone know how to use that stuff, or is it not
needed either?? Thanks again, Mick

If you dont have EAX loaded in Windows, choosing it in the game wont matter
So, youll have to set in manually each time you start N4 (If you turn it off
each time you leave N4 :)
