Hi Julian,
I can't specifically answer your question, but I do have this combo and I
don't notice a problem with CPU cycles being used up on my pII/450. I can tell
you that SCGT will have a noticable drop in smoothness when FF is turned on, but
that issue is reported across the board, not just with this hardware combo.
Without being sure of the numbers that go through every potential bottleneck
in the system, it might be erroneous to suggest that having a PCI sound card
helps a lot, no matter what wheel you use, but it sure can't hurt! As for the
wheel itself stealing too many clock cycles, I think choosing a wheel based on
someone's report of what kind of load it puts on the processor is probably
lopsided judgement, at best. If you have a fast system, it isn't going to make
any appreciable difference. If you have a slow system, you should probably get
a cheaper wheel and spend the money on more processing power or RAM.
Like I said, I can't answer your question because I honestly have no idea if
the SBLive!'s onboard processor compensates for anything. I can suggest that
worrying about cpu load from a certain wheel seems like a spurious concern, to
me. If nobody had read that rating of how much cpu juice each wheel uses,
no-one would bother to think about it and would choose a wheel based on how it
feels to them. This is likely still the best way to approach the issue.
