GPL & MX300 - A Heads Up.........

by Bill Mas » Thu, 01 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I've got a Diamond Viper 550 AGP card, a Diamond Monster II Voodoo2 card,
and a Diamond MX300 (Monster Sound II) card in  my system.

The Viper is running Diamonds latest drivers (255).  The Voodoo is running
3dfx's latest Glide drivers (2.56).  The MX300 is running the latest (2030)
reference drivers from Aureal, but this message applies to those running the
second (1.02) release of Diamond's Monster Sound drivers as well.

After quite a few illegal page faults or plain lockups in GPL, I was able to
find the cure.  In the A3D applet on the system tray, check the box next to
"Disable DirectSound Hardware Acceleration" under A3D Settings.  This is the
culprit.  This seems to apply only to the Vortex2 chipset boards (8030), as
the original Diamond sound drivers were just fine.

Perhaps those experiencing lockups/crashes who blamed it on the Glide
drivers might find that the A3D setup was the bad guy.....

HTH someone,

Bill

Bill,

Never had any trouble myself and I'm using the 1.02rel drivers from Diamond
and I have DirectSound3D enabled.  I ran the MX300 with 2 Diamond Monster II
Voodoo2 boards in SLI mode for about 8 months with no hint of problems and
none in GPL from the soundcard.

Chris,

Hmmm, have to go back and check the Diamond 1.02 drivers again.  What I DO
know is that with the latest Aureal drivers, this is necessary for me.

If others have no problem, then no harm and no foul.....<g>

Glad it works for you, though.

Regards,

Bill
