GPL - bad "static" with Voodoo2 and MX300, and mouse ghosting

Hi,

With both a clone Voodoo2 and a Diamond MX300 with drivers dated
11/18/98 I get a terrible extra sound channel a bit like a short-wave
radio picking up interference. It only happens when the game is
playing normal engine noises, it's OK sitting at the menu screen. It's
distracting during racing, and ***y annonying at the garage menus.
I've tried going from 4 voices to 16, but more voices just introduces
more static!

Anyone seen this? Anyone got a fix?

Also, the mouse cursor occasionally gets leaves behind a glitch when
changing resolutions, although I think this might be more a problem of
my Matrox G200.

Neither of these problenms happened before I added the V2 board.

TIA

Ken

I would say your Voodoo 2 clone is hogging the PCI bus. Sometime just
playing with drivers can fix it. Try the new Aureal reference drivers and
the latest Voodoo 2 reference drivers.

I had one friend with a similar problem and a motherboard exchange was
needed due to the way the PCI bus was being handled.

Good luck.

I have the same setup and the same problem, although it's not too bad. I've
heard, but haven't tested, of a fix involving turning down the 3d
acceleration on the MX300. I can't for the life of me think how that's done,
but it involves getting properties of the MX300 via device manager or
something. Maybe it's directx properties....hmmmm

Can anyone else finish my half-baked response...?

For the SB Live, it's:

start menu - settings - control panel - multimedia

Under the audio tab there should be an "advanced"
button.  In this menu there is a hardware acceleration
slider.

FWIW, that slider didn't help with my SB Live static
problem.

*** Disabling UDMA does solve it. ***

Don't know if any of this will help the MX300.

Didn't work for my MX300 either!

I thought UDMA was a hard disk standard? Anyway, I did that and no
change.

Maybe I'll try swapping slots, if the pass-through cable will bridge
the gap.

Nope, no luck, but I also pulled my TV Card, and GPL works again. I
won't be able to watch Japanese TV anymore (but I'll put it back in
for the Grand Prix) but if you've watched any TV over here, you'll
know I won't be missing much.

Ugh, no, it just delayed the onset of troubles - it's now about a
minute before the static starts.

It is a hard disk standard.  But, for whatever reason,
it is also the on/off switch for my SB Live static.

Wish it worked for mine....
