GPL : Multiplayer connection problems

by Capt.Bla » Sat, 20 Oct 2001 18:16:31

Hi All,

I'm trying to run GPL in multiplayer mode on two PCs at home, with no
success. PC 1 (Martha) is a K62-500 with 160Mb and a Voodoo Banshee.
PC 2 (Bertha) is Duron 800 with 256Mb and a GF2 MX200. Connection is
via ethernet cards and a cross-over cable.

I start the game up on both, choose Host on Bertha and Join on Martha,
the race selected appears on Martha (as TCP connection), select it and
a window opens stating that it's opening network connection etc etc,
then PC 1 locks and nowt happens - ever. On Bertha, I can carry on
driving in practice etc.

If I try Hosting from Martha, Bertha sees it and attempts to join but
again Martha throws a wobbler and grinds to a halt, Bertha tells me
the connection has timed out and drops back to the join screen.

The connection between the two works fine in native windows (WIN98SE)
as I can access data/printers etc across the systems.

Core.ini is from a zip file on Bert Westras site, Verbose with Bertha
having the D3D related bits added at the end.
Patchs installed are - 1.2; D3D; CPUFIX (in order)

Any ideas ?

Do you have a 'self-contained' network, or are your systems getting IP
addresses from an ISP and NAT?

Hi Eldred,

It's a self-contained network, I've assigned addresses, which GPL spots.

Hard to say Stan. GPL does not have trouble with tcp/ip communictations in
general. You may try to set
disable_network = 1

in core.ini, but this is only a long shot. I suspect it must be something in
Martha's installation. Or perhaps it has to do with the Banshee. So you
could try what happens with Martha in software mode (no 3d accelerator), and
check if your network card is not sharing an IRQ with the Banshee (not sure
here if the Banshee does use one, but check anyway.

Thanxs Bart.....apologies for the name change. I'll try out the disable
network and let you know............ I've checked the banshee and it is
sharing an IRQ with the NIC - I'll try moving them around and see what
happens.

Fingers crossed...Stan

'Fraid it didn't work. setting disable network = 1, removes TCP, so
set back to 0. Then ensured banshee and NIC were on seperate IRQs and
that Bertha & Martha could see each other after the change - which
they could. Try joining a session from Martha and it came up with
'opening connection' then froze. On the plus side the mouse changed to
hourglass and still moved around, but martha still needed a reboot.
Hey ho, maybe the systems realise I'm not up to any competition yet.

Well I'm out of options then, sorry. If something springs to mind I will let
you know.

Thanks for trying anyway.
I loaded GP3 on both sys last night - just to check that it wasn't a
more basic problem, and the network option worked straight off - pity
I don't like the game.
Does GPL need to write to any files during multiplay - if so one of
these may be read-only ? I'll go thru directory and see what I can see

GPL : Multiplayer connection problems

by Capt.Bla » Thu, 25 Oct 2001 23:22:18

Hi Bart,

Finally succeeded last night !! I changed core.ini line

ip_addr_lookup_timeout = 2
to
ip_addr_lookup_timeout = 9

and also changed my IP addresses on both sys to the default
192.168.0.n (Had been using 125.125.125.n - some windows tweak guide I
read suggests that addresses using 125 multiples give better response)
and Hey presto. Once wifey picked me up off the floor, I had a fine
old time driving circles round her - but enough of my peccadillos.

I'm not sure which of these changes succeeded, so when I get a chance
I'll reverse each one and post the results for anyone interested

Thanks for the help, Stan

This must be a joke.....

I'm interested. I can't imagine any of the two things you mention being the
problem since you did get a connection going. This means the ip was found
and working. The problems started when you went to the track on Martha
right? Perhaps you made another change somewhere in the system?

Anyway, GPL shows some strange behaviour differences between online and
offline, I hold anything possible, even those I can't imagine....... ;-)

Hi Bart,

You're right in that the problem started with going into the track
on Martha, but reversing the two changes individually last night it
would appear that it was the IP address it didn't like. I changed to
the IP_LOOKUP back to 2 and the systems connected and worked fine on
192.168.0, but as soon as I had them on 125.125.125 martha locked up
(in GPL) even increasing the IP lookup value did not alter this.
BTW, I checked server.ini on martha and prior to it working it held no
values in [IP0], [IP1], afterwards it had the 192.168

Funny old world innit
Thanks again, Stan

PS your comment 'this must be a joke' was that ref the 125's being
quicker or GPL not liking 125 ?

Ok you have proven it :)  Very weird indeed.... Is Martha connected
otherwise to a network or the internet?

GPL writes the last IP's used in here. As the comment in server.ini says,
the lines are informational only.

It was about specific ip's being quicker.  It must be either a joke or a
trick to let you use these ip numbers to create a target for an attack
(these 125 ip's are carried over the internet).

Martha is on the internet via modem

It was from www.tweak3d.net. They have a number of 'How to...' and
tweak articles. The bit about 125 was from the Win9x Lan guide.

Hi  Stan,

He mentions being 1 to 2 ms quicker in quake measured only on his system,
but does not say what are the normal times he gets. Very discutable at least
in my opinion.
Also the advert to install file and printer sharing. Make sure it is not
bound to the adapter you use for internet.

Anyway, just use 192.168 and you're fine :)

Bye
Bart
