GPL: IPX Connections Time Out Problem

by Andy Stra » Fri, 02 Feb 2001 22:23:46

I have a pc with two network cards, one for the lan and one for a
cable modem. I use this gateway pc to host on VROC but on my other lan
PCs I want to join using IPX (if I could use two tcp/ip connections I
would but that doesn't seem possible). I have allowed up to 2
IPX connections in the Vroc settings.

I set up the dedicated server to host but lan ipx connections 'time
out' so I end up connecting via vroc to a server that's sitting right
next to me, wasting valuable bandwidth for all.

The gateway PC is running win 2000, and the clients (either WinME
or W2k) can see the local game fine, just never seem to connect
without a 'time out'! No different using direction connections or
winvroc.

Really annoying but I'm hoping someone else has overcome a simular
problem....

2 networks cards with TCP/IP will work on a GPL host.  I do this.

For example, I have 1 network card connected to the internet and 1 to my
LAN.  Make sure the "alternate_ip_lookup = 1" is in your core.ini file.
You should see both IP addresses on the multiplayer host screen.  Just
check-mark the 2 boxes.

If your using DHCP for your LAN segment, that might be the problem.  Try
assigning a fixed IP address to the LAN network card.

Umm, try a "tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" command to the server to make sure
it's not dropping any packets.

Instead of tracert, you should use ping to determine if packets are
being dropped.

Jason.
