GTR Demo, What should I tweak?

by Cliff Roma » Tue, 04 May 2004 09:20:04

Sorry, I am going to use NASCAR terms since that is what I am familiar
with..

I tried the GTR Demo today and since I do not know anything about tweaking
setups, I used the default setup in the game.

Entering turns my car was VERY Tight, then once it started to turn, it was
too easy to overturn the corner.

Is this something that everyone else is experiencing?  Any ideas what I can
do to tweak this so that I can enjoy the demo a bit more?

As it is, running around the track as fast as I can (having to slow down far
too early before hitting the turns so that I can actually turn), I am only
running 2:30 laps.  Way off the pace.  However if I try to go any faster, my
car just can not make the turn.

Any ideas are welcome.  Love the sound and the graphics of the demo so far!

Thanks

The default setup has WAY too much understeer.  I've had to do a lot more
tweaking than I initially expected to get it handling well.  Even then, GTR
seems to reward very precise driving, more so than anything else I've
played.  Grip is terrible off the racing line (or is it in my head?), and
you'll be in trouble if you lock up the brakes.

IMHO, you need to dial out the understeer.  I'm no setup guru though, so
I'll leave the tips to more seasoned pros. :)

I started off there too, but I'm down to 2:18 and am positive I can hit 2:16
if I string together three good sectors.  For me, setup made the biggest
difference as it literally took me down ~8 secs very quickly.  I don't see
how anyone could turn a sub 2:20 on that default setup.  Learning not to
over drive and what speeds are possible (for me) through each turn made up
another 1-2.  The last bit of improvement came from learning to be quicker
through the 5/6th gear turns and coming off a few others a little better.

Of course, I'm still making small mistakes that lead to offs, so consistent
of 2:20-2:21s are probably race pace for me.  Anyway, see if you can track
down the GTR2002 setup guide.  That should probably help get you going.

"Cliff Roman"

What type of controller do you use Cliff?   I am butcher of sims, a
complete hack, yet I'm getting down to the 2:22 range...which is 7 seconds
slower than some of the folks have been posting.  So you 'should' be able
to find more speed.  In the menu screens are the options for several
different types of controllers.  You might want to experiment with
different ones, even if they don't match your hardware.
Next, make sure speed sensitivty is low and that Stabilty and traction
control are turned off.   Finally, you just may be overdriving the car.
It's never worked for me, but many folks say 'slow in, fast out.'  For me
it's 'slow in slow out' :)  But try burning off a little more speed in a
straight line before cornering.
I don't think the ISI sims respond to trail braking the way Papyrus sims
do, you might be hindering your turn-in if you are braking.

You're doing much better than me.  My best after 10 laps is only a 2:51.6

That high-pitched whine is annoying as hell to me.  Piercing, even.  I'll have
to turn that down(off) if I want to run it for any length of time.

It's still annoying as hell to me.  Strange as it may seem to some - that would
be a deal-breaker, if I can't turn that noise down.
I can't stand it.

The player.plr file has a bunch of tweaks available but I dont know what
they all mean yet.  Perhaps one of these can adjust the gear whine.

if worst comes to worst, I'm sure there is a .wav file that can be
replaced with silence.  Or even just cut the volume by a factor of 10.
Since so much of GTR resembles the previous ISI products...we should be
able to figure out something.
Dollars to donuts it might even be as simple as swapping the exterior
wav file for the interior one.
