Viper: Multiplayer & XP no go?

I have the 1.2.3 beta patch but when i click on the multiplayer button, it
just loads for a bit then does nothing? Is it not possible in XP or is there
something i can do to get it working?

With XP (even in various compatability modes) the game just sits and waits
at the start, no green light, in fact no light at all. The game is still
running though as I can press 'esc' and get back to the menu.

I recently installed Viper on my XP box a few weeks ago to try out the
new tracks and cars and it works.  I had to turn on compatibility
mode.  I applied all the patches up to 1.23beta.

Whicj compatability mode did you use? Am I missing something, like a button
to press to start the race?
