Viper Multiplayer

Hello.  I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this problem.  When I
play Viper Multiplayer through either the modem or lan connection, I keep
getting disconnected in the midle of the races.  During the races, the other
cars are sometimes flying all over the screen.  When I play online, I race
against my friend who only lives about 5 blocks away!  I can't understand
having a bad connection due to how close we live.  For a while, we had no
problems and were able to race for hours nonstop.  Now, we can hardly get in
one race before getting disconnected.  We both tried reinstalling Viper to no
avail.  Also, we both have 56k modems.  Anyone with similiar
problems/suggestions?  TIA......        Dave Z

This typically indicates a packet loss problem.  Viper Racing is very
tolerant of laggy connections, but throw packet loss into the equation
and cars start jumping all over.

There could be several reasons why this is happening.  Your modem
could be trying to retrain, in which case you'll have to get out the
manual and force it to connect at a lower speed.  You could have line
noise problems.  Most modems have a terminal function that will test
line noise.  If your signal to noise ratio is lower than about 40 db,
that would be your problem.

Cars flying around is usually due to lag.  As for the disconnection, i
talked to Dave Broske recently and he said that the patch will address modem
and multiplayer issues....

This is a very smart answer.  I'm impressed :)

Not many people understand how latency and packet loss affects things
like this, and how high speeds can work against you, and not for you!

Good job :)
