Are F12001 problems OS releated?

by MadDAW » Thu, 01 Nov 2001 19:31:01

I have been runnig Windows ME and have had the typical problems with F12001
running very poorly. I had been using the 21.8x drivers because they have
helped with other games and pretty much figured I would just wait for a
patch. Well I got a copy of Windows2000 so I set up a dual boot system on my
machine. For grins and giggles I loaded F12001 again with the 21.8x drivers
and now f12001 runs great. The only problem with it is I still have the
black mirrors. The poor frame rates are gone, the delay in the steering is
gone, etc. It even looks better as well. So the only thing I'm wondering is
if the 21.xx series of drivers don't like the older dos based operating
systems, and f12001 is the first title to really push it.  I can tell you
after some more testing if everything runs ok I'll be dumping ME. Its not
that I think ME is bad, but that Win2000 is better.

Are F12001 problems OS releated?

For what my 2 cents are worth, I've tried using 12.41's, 12.90's, 21.81's,
21.83's and 21.88's in WinME and WinXP, and have had nothing change in F1
2001's performance.  I tried Win2000 once, but seem to have way more ***
incompatibility issues with it than XP.  I am so frustrated that on a 1.4
tbird/GF2 Ultra/512mb, the highest I can run this game (with anti alias on
the "2" setting) is 1024x768x16.  I recently put WinME back on to see if it
was in fact OS related, and was _very_ surprised to see that nothing changed
for me.

I want to say for the record that I still absolutely love this game, my only
sore feelings are towards it's graphics programming innards. :-)

Well, it is a pity that some people are having trouble with the graphics.
For the record, I use XP and have perfect performance with the 12.90s.  The
21s felt like driving through glue with black mirrors. Going back to the
12.90s solved all problems.

Black mirrors for me in 32 bit mode. I changed to 16 bit mode and they
worked. IMO I see very little, if no, difference between 16million colours
and 65000 colours. Our eyes are the weakest link, don't u think?

Mate, I tried this game on Windows 98se, 2000 and XP, and the same
problems I had were being exhibited on every single OS, with various
versions of Nvidias Detonators.

Turns out, I went to creatives site, and d/l'ed the newest version of
their drivers for my card, worked a freakin treat!

But in the past, I *have* experienced more joy with windows 2000. It
seems to be a hell of a lot more stable than 98 and DEFINATELY more
stable than ME!!

Your conclusion is correct. Windows ME sucks pap. windows 2k is much
better.
