NFS:PU online - modified cars?

by Stephen Ferguso » Mon, 03 Jul 2000 04:00:00

I finally ventured into the online world of Porsche racing.  The lag and
warping wasn't so bad considering everyone was on opposite sides of the
Atlantic, although there was one moment where 911 Turbos were teleporting
all over the Monaco tunnel.

What I was wondering (I know, read the manual) was if it is possible to use
modified cars in online play.  The first set of races I entered, I was
strongly running midpack for the ten or so races with a 2000 Turbo, and the
winner was always in sight.  A great set of races, but the 2000 Turbo isn't
my first choice from Porsche.  I switched to a 356 only race, as the 356 is
one of my favourites, and watched as everyone promptly ran away from me an
hid.  Hmmm... maybe I don't know how to drive my favourite car, I thought.
I tried a set of Boxter races, and was more than a little disappointed to
find myself finishing up to a minute behind in the Industrial Zone, an
almost flat out track that only lasts a little over 3 minutes.  I'm not all
thumbs when it comes to sim racing, as I find myself within 10-15% of the
top times in GPL, Viper etc.

Were they running modified cars?  I wasn't about to accuse anyone of hacking
cars until I found out if there is a legit way to run modified cars (perhaps
from your own "stable"?).  The manual doesn't have much to say on this.

Not much time to chat and ask questions, as everyone just jumps into the
next race right away.

Almost everyone who races online runs modified cars. If you notice on
the screen that you see before the race, where you can chat at the
bottom and everyone's names and cars are on the top, if the car has an
asterisk beside it, that means it is modified. No asterisk is factory
stock.

NFS:PU online - modified cars?

Aha... thought that was what the asterisk was for.  Now for the 60,000 (and
perhaps stupid) question.  How do I run a modified car?  Is this in the
manual, or an online FAQ somewhere?  My car selection screen seems to only
offer stock cars.

Also, if that's the case, then I feel a lot better about my mid-pack
performance in some races...

NFS:PU online - modified cars?

I believe that you have to acquire and modify the cars in evolution mode-
after that it will be available for online races in your inventory of cars.
Otherwise the cars you race will be stock only.

Yes, as you go thru evolution you buy cars and can buy parts and then add
them to the car.  The ***arts site linked on www.nfscheats.com has a
savegame for all the cars if you don't want to bother with evolution.
You'll need to change suspension settings also for best times.  The world
records site  http://www.racesimcentral.net/~eel/nfswr/index.html
has replays you can use the replay analyzer on to see suspension settings of
record runs :)

NFS:PU online - modified cars?

by Stephen Ferguso » Tue, 04 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Thanks for the tips... I will have to look a little more closely at the car
selection screen next time, as I most definitely have a very sweet,
burnt-orange 356 Carrera which I have lovingly tweaked (in the car setup
sense and in the "oops, hit a tree again" sense) and I want to pull that one
out of my "quiver" for special races.  The Atomic Pumpkin, I like to call
it.  And using the cheat would defeat half the reason of buying the game.
Although last night I was more than a little irritated when I built up a
killer 964 Turbo, only to find that the next tournament was for the 993...
DOH!  Read the fine print.  Garage sale time for the intercooler, throttle
body etc., as I never liked the 964s anyway  :-)

Will have to go look at the record site.  Meanwhile, anyone interested in
the Jimmy Dean invitational online tournament (550 Spyders only)?  Is there
a nicer car in NFS?  I don't think so.

NFS:PU online - modified cars?

There is a bug on-line. 1950-1953 356's have the performance of 90's turbo
charged cars.

EA is working on a patch...

The 3.5 NFS5 patch had many problems with car physics being swapped in
online races.  I believe it has been fixed as of now.  I don't know of any
bug specifically related to the 356 cars.

I think the * actually means the driver owns the car, but chances are he's
bought the modified parts for it if he owns it. To race a modified car, just
choose one you've bought during the game. However.... I also believe there
are cars modified beyond what you can purchase. At least someone told me
this was so. This was during a session where I was winning all the
unmodified races and some modified ones, but on others while I was running a
'legally' modified car, I was still getting blown away. So, from what I've
been told, there is at least one site out there that tells you how to modify
the cars further than what the game intends.
