There are plenty of people out there who lap MUCH slower than 1:30 - 1:31 at
Monza and race on VROC.
Once you are pretty consistent, and won't cause 10 car pile-ups, dive in,
it's what GPL is really all about =)

Cheers,

Late to the GPL scene I finally dove in and bought the sim when I saw a
price that I couldn't pass up. Rush home and first things first... go online
to dl everything I thought I would need add-on and patches wise (thanks to
all who post answers in ras about gpl -- I wouldn't have found the sites
without all the help).
I load GPL, apply the 1.2 patch and following the general consensus in ras I
loaded Allison's set-ups for the Coventry and proceed to Monza. Go straight
to the GP cars and start turning laps cautiously at first... about 1:40. I'm
thinkin' this isn't so bad. The car's a little unforgiving but I think I can
start pushing it. So, I start throwing it into corners and grabbin' it
exiting corners and I get my times to a consistent 1:35 to 1:36 with only a
couple of spins.
Then I start thinking about frame rate... how much detail can I turn on
without losing precious frames per second. Go to the options screen and
that's when I notice it. "Brake Help" = ON!!! "Steering Help" = ON!!!
OOOoooooHHhhhhh NNNnnnnOOooooooo!!!
Okay, that's okay. Turn that mamby-pamby help off and go back to the pits.
Exit pits... promptly doughnut the car! Okay, "shift-R", and like they are
fond of saying in ras -- gently squeeze down on the throttle and accelerate.
No problem. "Curva Grande" coming up brake into it in a straight line -- put
the nose into the guard rail. Arrrgh! Okay, that's okay. "Shift-R" and
squeeze the throttle down. No problem. "Della Rogia" coming up -- whew,
feeling a momentary confidence... brake into "Lesmos" very cautiously, this
might not be so bad... exiting "Lesmos" I get on the gas a little too
quickly and the back end comes around like it was hit at a crossing by a
freight train!!! "Shift-R" and accelerate cautiously through "Serraglio"
lift slightly coming into "Ascari" back on the throttle and brake hard into
"Parabolica". I must have done that right because I actually get into it
okay, hit the apex with slight tire squeal, a little brick footed on the gas
and that freight train hits the back end again!!!

This is fun... just keep telling yourself this is fun."Shift-R" and I'm on
my way again. Cross the start finish and do it all again.
I have been repeating this scenario for the last hour and I am now into the
1:35's again and I can actually put 3 to 5 laps together without an off. I
just wanted to let all the people who have never tried GPL that you should
definitely try this sim if only to improve your spin recovery technique.
The thing of it all is that after an hour I was used up... and grinning like
a fool after putting together 5 laps that were reasonably consistent even if
they are a little slow. I remember someone posting that VROC should be
avoided until you can run a 1:30 to 1:31 at Monza... you won't be seeing me
there any time soon. I have a lot of work to do.

Keep in Mind Robin that the reduced traction of cold tires is a bit overdone in
gpl, and you shouldn't try to go *** the first lap, and every time you
shift-r your back on cold tires. While your learning, better to run in no
damage mode, and spent more time on warmed up tires. Also, when using the
default setups, reduce the fuel level(weight) and save the setup with another
name, helps a bunch.

Great story.    It brings back memories of my first few (30+) sessions with
GPL.   Just stick with it and you'll see why it has become a passion with
many.   When you start running consistent 1:30's at Monza you'll really
start to "feel" the car and it's limit and know when you've just crossed it.

Have fun....don't get discouraged, take it slow at first, and you'll be glad
you stuck it out.   Great fun awaits!

Mine is 1.32 with a Lotus (Grand Prix mode and real damage).  Don't know how Clark can do
1.29.  Must be his setup.

ONe thing to remember!!! Every time you do a Shift-R you get new cold
slippery tires! When I started out I set damage to none and if I
wrecked I would just dirve back to the track and continue if possible!

Thanks Don, I didn't know that. Learning all the time. I have now spent
about 2 to 3 hours with GPL and I am getting more comfortable in the drivers
seat. I just can't imagine the hours it takes to master this thing. Multiply
all the cars by all the tracks and it equates to a ton of hours practicing.
I'll try the tip on the setup -- does it apply to Allison's setups as well?

Thanks for the tip, Steve. Someone else noted the same thing to me and I am
going to try just turning the laps without the "Shift-R".

Great post, Robin.  Hang in there.  There was excellent advice downstream from
Don Scurlock about not using Shift-R so much due to the cold tire effect.  Try
that.  Also, you don't need to lap in the 1:30 range to race on VROC.  Once you
can race consistently (stay on the track, hold your line, safely let others
by), you should be able to race on VROC with no problem.

Have fun,

Dave Ewing
