Time off from GPL

I've had a long break from GPL (like several months :-(, but I've
finally handed in my project, got a job sorted and fixed the drivers
on my wheel (the answer was to add the legacy SB drivers to Autoexec).

Since then I've been playing GPL again almost solidly for a week :-),
and despite being out of practice with it I've taken a total of seven
seconds out of my GPLRank, at Spa, Monaco and Rouen; and I've taken
the Coventry below 8:48 at the 'Ring twice, with spins on both laps,
against a PB (Lotus or Eagle) of 8:40.

Not complaining, but why haven't I lost my touch?  Anyone else had
anything similar?  In the meantime I have learnt to race a radio
control 'pan car' (kinda like an LMP-675; some piccies on
www.geocities.com/jp_hodgson/rc.html ) but that's not exactly the
same...

Oh well, happy lapping!

I would say you haven't lost your touch because GPL reacts realisticly
to your inputs, therefore the car does what you would expect.  If you
jump into your real car after going on a cruise ship for a month, you
shouldn't be surprised that you can stay on the road  ;)

2001:

Yep. If you go for a [push-]bike ride after leaving your bicycle in the
garage all winter, you wouldn't expect to fall off, would you? Another
tribute to GPL's physics, I s'pose.

Sure, but breaking my lap records in a 1000 hp/tonne monster... ?

And I'm falling off plenty, thanks, just as always! ;-)

It is an interesting fact, but a proven fact nonetheless, that improvement
dosn't really happen during practice, but in the 'downtime' between
practices.

Sounds to me like you needed a break to get better.

Actually sometimes some time off is just what the doctor ordered, it often
gets rid of some of the temporary bad habits you may have developed, and you
drive the car more naturally, with the benefit of your previous experience..

(was that one sentence?)

btw. I have a 1\10th Tamiya F1 with the Sauber body (gotta do something
about that) It really scoots with just a stock motor in in, though it's
probably a little heavier than your presumably 1\12th scale LMP?

Two questions:  Are you any relation to Russell Hodgson?  That would explain
your skill.<g>
Two, do you have the replays from those laps?  I've done a 8:54 in a Cooper,
8:53 in an Eagle, and 8:43 in the Lotus - all clean.  I'd like to see how you
can do that 8:48...

experience..

Yeah, kinda know what you mean ;-)

Actually it's a 10th - an Associated RC10L3.  1200g, and it's pretty
rapid with a 16x3 modified!

Nope, not knowingly... it's a rather common Yorkshire surname, which
is where my dad's from.

I've got the old 8:40 - IIRC it features about three 'moments' (some
light wall-bouncing!) although no spins, but it was one of those
'charmed' laps - I particularly remember the first bridge after
Soddingprivet Hedgenschtop (sorry, Kallenhard!) where I had it
sideways on the brakes and somehow held it!

I can email it to you if you want - the reply address used here?  1.79
meg...

Alternatively, if I break that time in the near future (which'll be in
a Coventry I suspect) I'll save that.  I spent much of my early GPL
time at the 'Ring, so it might be one of my better tracks relatively
speaking.

If that's the case, then shouldn't you see the same 'enhancements' at a track
that you haven't driven in a while?

Ok, if there weren't any spins, then it's probably similar to my laps.  I
thought you'd made up time from 2 spins...<g>

8:38.96 in the Cov after I posted that, on about Lap 4 with no real
drama.  Woohoo, that's almost another two seconds off my GPLRank!
I've got the replay this time...

It's not an uncommon experience for me.
