GPL: decline in Monza times! Zen of GPL?

by Arto Wik » Tue, 22 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Cheers dear GPL racers,

a strange thing has happened! I already could drive 1:32.11 in Monza by
Lotus, and I even could keep quite constant laps around 1:33. But now in
a couple of days I have not been able to get any better than something
between 1:35 and 1:36! And when I drove my best time, I didn't even try
too much. And now I desperately try to be fast, with the only result of
being more than 3 seconds slower!

Have any of you got a similiar experiences? Decline of speed?
Should I really start to concentrate on some "Zen of GPL"?
When you are not trying too much, you get the best results...

Try re-calibrating your controller....

And if resetting the controller doesn't help make sure that any of the
"helps" didn't get turned on by a rival's mechanic whilst you slept.

This happened to me at Watkins Glen recently. I was running consistant 1:06's
in a lotus, went back a couple hours later, and the best I could do was high
1:07's, low 1:08's

Yup...if you can't hit the same speeds and get the same punch from corners
(and/or brakes are misbehaving) your controller calibration may be suspect.
I found this after having a super-lame practice session...

I did as you advised. And it helped! I'm back in 1:32-1:34 range.
Thank you!

By the way, I also checked the "helps" settings and they were ok (I
checked also the contents of the .ini-file), but anyway I have a
strange feeling that earlier I could easily lock the wheels by braking.
Now it seems to be nearly impossible? I use Lotus default with lovered
car and gasoline for 8 laps. What could be the reason? The pedal is
getting old? It is some EXL500. Or does the sim automatically change
something, when it thinks I've practised enough...?  :)

Yep, running at Zandvoort one time I was turning consistent low 1m25s. I
came back an hour later and spent about 2 hours going no faster than
1m26.06.....

Cheers!

There is a glitch in GPL that sometimes activates the ABS (braking
help) or traction control when you change drivers or change cars.
It's not always evident from the settings.  Go out on the track and
make sure you can lock the brakes and get wheelspin.  If it happens,
the fix is to delete your controls.cfg from gpl/players/player_name
and recalibrate.

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

Man and I thought I was the only one to do that.  I wish I could run 1:26s
at Zanvoort and feel it was slow.
