MSFF USB wheel on WINXP : advice much appreciated

by Ian5 » Sat, 15 Jun 2002 06:30:59

Before I go nuts.

Now using XP HomeEd and for the life of me can I hell get our MS FF wheel to
work at all.

Tried everything (I tink) and it isn't even listed in the game controller
panel. Only thing listed is "sidewinder - auto-detect". Which when selected
just puts up something called SW 3D Pro not connected. Wunderful

Also noticed that when I switch computer on...wheel lights dont flash and
doesnt do its wind up sequence.

Been to MS website...sfa there.

So any advice, help would be greatfully appreciated.

I had the same troubble, and did this.
Boot with the wheel attached to an USB-port.
Goto Device Manager, find Human Interface Devices, and in there rightclick
on the Sidewinder (nomatter which model it shows unless you have other
Sidewinders attached), and select Uninstall. After that, unplug your wheel,
reboot, and after reboot, reconnect the wheel to USB. It worked for me. My
error was, that I connected the wheel with the PC off, and when it bootet it
found "something", but not a MS FF. When I did the Sidewinder Auto-detect,
it found a 3D Pro joystick, but this was not connected.

Hope this helps.

Did you install the software that came with the wheel before you
plugged it in?  Don't know if this really matters but that is the
order the directions suggest.  Also make sure that the wheel is
plugged in to a power source.  Also make sure that your USB
connectors/drivers are set up correctly, look for any conflicts in
device manager.  Try booting up with the wheel unplugged and then
plugging it in and see if xp "installs" it.  Make sure that any other
usb devices you have are working properly.  Can't really think of
anything else to try, but I have XP and my MSFF is working fine.

If this is the USB version, you should not be having any problems, and you
should not have to configure _anything_.

Just connect the wheel, and install the SideWinder 4.0 software.  It will
complain that it may not be compatible, but install it anyway.  Hey, MS WHQL
certified it in this condition LOL!

Restart, and you should be all set.

If it's a GamePort version of the MSFFW, you are pretty much out of luck.
Some can get it to work, but there will never be a SideWinder software
update for GamePort versions.

This is generally good advice for all USB devices.  Install the software
before connecting the device.

However, it shouldn't make a difference with the MSFFW.  I've been leaving
it connected for years and it's never caused an issue.

Connector is too hard to get to :)

Thanks for the advice. Spent last night crawling all over back of PC
unplugging and inserting things left right and centre. Finally got the
dammed thing to work. Missus wasn't so sure though..she walked in when I was
crouched over the tower (its on the desk stuck in the corner) muttering away
to myself and gave me a funny look.  Auto-***a eh !!

Anyway...saved me a load of hassle.

Much appreciated.
