F1 sims? What is it with you guys?

I was following a thread from a couple of different links and ended up
on the Blackhole Motorsports forum.  There one of the threads in the forum
was asking about F1 cars in GTR.  We need a good F1 sim...we need more F1.
We need we need we need....

Crimeny!  We have had multiple F1 sims since 1996.  Grand prix 1,2,3,4.
F1rc, F12kx thru F1c.  And yet they keep crying for more F1 sims.  Granted
the sport is changing and it's good to see updates...but MAN!
We are finally seeing some decent rally sims like Richard Burns.  We are
finally seeing some improving Sportscar sims like GTR.  We've got World
racing on the horizon,  rFactor and more, it seems the sim world has
finally weened itself off of ONLY F1 or Nascar.  So the MOMENT there is a
slight pause in F1sims...we get the above....

  I watch F1, I'm a fan.  It's not my favorite, but I rarely miss a race on
the tube.  I don't usually drive the F1 sims, but do use them for mods.
I'm not ANTI F1,  I'm just suprised that the one group that HAS been well
represented for the last 6 or 7 years is the one group whining for more
more more

We need good F1 sims ;-)

Good point, though.

hasn't been a good online F1 sim for PC since - 1998. F1C? Not if u wanna
play it online. So yeah, it would be nice - though I'd settle for ANY open
wheel sim ... and I mean any including formula ford - bring on NetKat
Pro!!!!!!!

Since F1C, there has been no new release of an F1 sim, so we are all
"jonesing" for the latest and greatest. We see the difference that a
dedicated team can make using the same game engine (GTR vs. F1C) and
want to see the same changes. Point taken though. I have and enjoy RBR,
the problem there is that there is no real head to head racing, due to
the nature of rallying.

It's been two years since we've had a new F1 sim, and since F1 is by far the
most popular league/sport on the planet, people want something new.

I get bored very quickly driving the slow, low performance cars that we've
had in just about every sim (outside of the F1 sims) in recent years. I
don't want to drive old cars, and I don't want to drive new sports cars that
can't hold a candle to an F1 car on a real race track. I try to like them,
but I very quickly want more performance from the car. GTP is fun at certain
tracks, but at others, there's still no comparison to an F1 car.

I've always wanted to start a thread which asked why some of you are so
obsessed with driving old, slow, sloppy handling cars, or slow, sports cars.
NASCAR cars? When you could drive an F1 car? Didn't bother though because I
know it would just***some of you off, and I know the answers anyway.

The thought of a new rFactor based F1 sim is likely going to be *the* sim
that I've been waiting eight years for.

Fair enough,  but here is another question that has been itching at me.
rFactor is the latest ISI version.  And everyone pretty much has been
raving about this demo.  What is it that separates rFactor from the
previous ISI f12kx line of sims that gets everyone so hot?  What is it that
has caught everyone's attention.  After all, you could say rFactor is just
F1c++ or even Nascar Racing Sim+.
Again,  I've been using ISI sims for the last 5 years.  I'm not knocking
them now.  I'm just curious why others who have been so adamnatly(sp?)
against prior ISI releases, even F1c, are now all hot to trot over rFactor.
I'm not singling you out David, just the whole group has latched on to
rFactor when in the past this has been a very devided user's group.

It seems like the new game engine will be mre than just a step up from the
previous. Multiplay seems very good now. People have read about the features
that will be in the final release and are e***d.

You've hit on something though. I'm not sure that people realize that,
according to at least one of the developers, the physics in the demo are
only about a 5 on a scale of 1-10 as a representation of the physics in the
final release. People are raving about the physics in the demo, but the demo
was really all about testing the multiplay. Maybe people weren't correct in
their criticisms of the old ISI physics?

Just a tought: maybe the problem with recent F1 sims is not about the
cars, but about the "real race tracks". And I do not mean that it is
because these tracks were not adequately reproduced, alas.

I also suspect that for many of us the absolute performance of the car
does not translate automatically into driving fun.  Case in point: LFS.

For me, the answer is simple: I can still drive a sports car like
those in GTR with reasonable precision after a couple of beers, while
in F1C you really have to be on the edge with lightning quick
reactions in order not to suck or to crash. The "edge" in F1C is a
much sharper blade than those relatively forgiving sports cars in GTR,
or even GTP for that matter.

Cheers, uwe

There has been 1 **sim** of F1 since 1998 - GPL - and it's based on the
1967 season! The rest have no multi or only token mukti so therefore do not
qualify as a complete **sim**. For that matter, the same can be said for
anything but Nascar since 1998 - the mods for NR2003 being of sub standard
quality.

Question is, will there ever be a GTR or F1C with NR2003
multi???????????????????????????????????????????? Oh, and a replay format
done by someone with half a clue, like NR2003, would be nice too.

Totally agree.  It's about time we got a good F2 sim for a change.

I've never got on with ISI sims - F1C always felt wrong to me, GTR was a
step in the right direction but the rear-end of ISI sims was always too
nervous - rFactor has cleared this up, and sliding is now not only possible
but it feels 'right' - and an improvement, as well, in the feel of the cars
at low speed - F1C was not right in that department, and GTR isn't either -
add to that the less edgy feel over the kerbs (F1C at Imola was a pig, and
just not 'realistic'), and rFactor looks to finally have caught up to
Papy-based sims in terms of feel.

But for me the key to the rfactor demo is the rear of the cars - they just
feel right now. GTR feels right, in the fast bits, but in the slow bits I am
not convinced at all - but maybe I'm just odd (!).

Well they are still racing cars.  Give me anything in my hands and I'll want
to push it to the limit.  It's a... different challenge.  It's not the same
technical driving as Formula Ones, it's more of the gutsy feeling.  Of
course, there's also the fact that F1 aren't forgiving.  There's a reason
why there's so few drivers up there, it's the simple pyramid of skills and
talent.  We're pretty much all (except a few) down there hoping for a car
that can match our skills.

Oh and for old cars, it's the nostalgia/historical effect.  Like WW2 plane
sims versus Falcon 4.

But hey if I had the choice, of course I'll take the F1.

By the same token, why do people still listen to and appreciate the
music of the Beatles which was produced using antiquated, analog,
4-track reel-to-reel technology when their time could be better spent
listening to the music of mega-stars like Britney Spears or Jessica
Simpson which is produced using modern day, multi-million dollar
state-of-the-art digital technology?
