F1 2000 - there is hope in the low end, too

by Arto Wik » Sat, 01 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Yesterday got my F1 2000. It looked horrible in the beginning...
But there seems to be some hope. After trying to get decent view
and decent fps' in my nowadays already "low end" system - PII350,
Voodoo 2 8Mb - I happened to read an article in RAS that solved
the problem! Sorry I have missed the name, but thank you!

The solution is to reduce the number of your opponents: Just edit
your own driver file: go to folder Save, then go to the folder that has
the name you use in the game (your name?). Edit with NotePad the file
that has your name:

Under the title [GAMEOPTIONS] you'll find these lines

PR_Opponents=0
QR_Opponents=21
GP_Opponents=21
CH_Opponents=21
MP_Opponents=0

Edit these - for ex. according to the advice:

PR_Opponents=10
QR_Opponents=11
GP_Opponents=11
CH_Opponents=11
MP_Opponents=0

The result was excellent! Now I can use most of the graphics!
Well, the starts are not so good, especially in Monaco...

I also tried the mirrors and often even they do not spoil the fps'.
And without them it seems to be usually very good!

And what is best, the opponents are varying from race to race. So also
in this limited way you are going to meet them all on track!

Arto

PS Another important advice from RAS for a Voodoo 2 8Mb user was to
   edit the file Video.cfg:
   Under the [Direct3D Secondary] the line
   800*600=0
   had to be changed to
   800*600=132
   Before that I could see onlu the upper left corner of the screen!
   This advice came from Bill Worthington in RAS. Thanks Bill!

Thanks, I have a PII 350 also (V2 12mb SLI) and was trying to find how to limit
cars in race.
I was considering a new CPU, but I guess I will  wait for GP3 to upgrade my
system.
I tried the utility "Fraps" and noticed that with no cars, changing the view to
no***pit ran a lot faster (8 fps), but I would rather to run with it. Also
when I turn off or on the display options from the in car view, it makes little
difference, except the little pop down message slows the frame rate down about
4fps.

*LOL* - this gives the term 'F1 simulation' a totally new meaning...
Sounds kinda like a 5 on 5 soccer match. ;)

Please explain why you get the same end result by selecting a lower
number of opponants within the game.

Are you joking? There is an opponant option within the game.

As far as I know, within the game you can
only lower the number of AI in the Quick
Race mode.  The GP and Champ mode is
locked into 22 AI drivers, unless you
edit the text file, that is.

Can anyone else confirm that by editing
the file, GP and Champ mode AI drivers
can be reduced?

You CAN'T select a lower number of AI cars in the game.
You CAN choose how many cars are DRAWN
You CAN choose how many are in practice mode.

But regardless the game still runs and calculates 21 AI during a race
regardless of how many are DRAWN.

By editing the PLR file you CAN set how many cars the AI runs and
calculates.

Gee Greg You must be losing it ;)
