Peter, yes, you should ditch the winmodem ASAP. If nothing else,
it will drag your CPU. I dunno if I'd vote for USR (it has it's
own idiosyncrancies), but anything non-winmodem would be a plus.
Before you buy a new modem, however, look into digital
availability in your area (ISDN/ADSL/Cable)... you might be glad
you did.
I'm assuming you have downloaded GPPING.EXE (did I get the
filename right?) and put it in your GPL directory. I doubt GPL
would boot via VROC without this, but tossing it forward just in
case.
Yes, you should run CORE.INI unless you are going to join a game
that expressly forbids it. If you try to connect to a CORE.INI
host, and you don;t have it, then this is most likely the source
of your problem.
