N4 - Will not run. Now what?

by Alastair Ingra » Wed, 14 Feb 2001 15:21:39

Hello, I have just purchased N4. It installed fine. However, when I go to
run it, it does nothing. My CD-R/RW unit just spins and my computer is maxed
out. I have a CPU meter and it is pegged. I have reinstalled the latest
firmware for the CD-R/RW drive. I really don't know what to do now. My
system is a P2, 400Mhz, 160 Ram, V770U with nvidia 6.50 drivers,Soundblaster
Live!, Yamaha CD-R/RW 8424SZ, SCSI'd to an Adaptec 2906 SCSI board. I have
done the Microsoft solution of uninstalling and re-installing, nothing
changed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Needless to say, I'm not real
happy about this. Thanks.

Papyrus is working for a fix for that problem I believe.

I have the same problem.  Game installs fine, but when I click on run on the
opening screen, I get an hourglass for 20 or 30 seconds then the curser
returns and then nothing.  Got an email from Sierra suggesting latest
drivers (which I did) and trying to disable SBL joy port (temporarily) to
start N4, but that didn't help either.  No CD patch will get game to run,
but only offline.  I'm waiting too.

It is probably because the anti piracy software on the N4 CD sees a CD-RW
in your system somewhere.

It has nothing to do with owning a CD-RW.  I wish people would quit saying
that.

I have a CD-RW in my machine and it runs fine.

It has to do with the fact that some drives in general have a problem with
the SecureRom copy protection.  This is a copy protection that alot of
companies use on alot of games.

While I wish it did not have it, it does.  I would recommend getting a drive
that plays friendly with it because otherwise you will have the same exact
problem if you buy another game that has it.  You can try seeing if there is
a firmware update for your drive. That has fixed the problem for some
people.

Fwiw,
I have a CD-RW in my system, along with a pretty generic NIC cd-rom drive.
MY cd-rom drive is my H drive, my CD-RW is my G drive. I installed N4 with
my H drive, and play it using the H drive, and have not had the below
problem.

There ARE copy protection systems that will not allow the game to function
with a CDR in it.  It's been reported in the past.

However, there are plenty of people that are running N4 with a Burner

Joystick port?  I saw the same tech support recommendation for a problem I had
with Diablo II(the current drug...).    Why would a port that isn't even in
USE(in this instance) cause problems?
