N4 does not run, fall back to Desktop right after the intro movie

As the subject said. When I run N4, it start the intro movie.
If I press any key to stop the movie or simply let the movie to
finish, the program will die right after. And dump back to desktop
with a error dialog box saying "This program has performed a illegal
operation, ..."

Has anyone had this problem ? I tried different 3D setups (OpenGL,
D3D, D3D with T&L) and also tried differen resolution both for 16bit
and 32bit. All died.

My setup is the following:
CPU: PIII 850
Video: Elsa Gladiac GEForce2 GTS (32M)
The video driver is the stock version.
Sound: Diamond MonsterSound M300
The driver is M300 driver Rel. 1.02
Memory: 384M

My question is what can be the problem ?
Will updating Video and sound driver help ?
Please help.

You should definitely update the video driver. The "stock version" is
probably months out of date.

Until I got rid of my GeForce, I couldn't run N4 either.  Replaced it
with a Voodoo5 and no problem since.

I have a bone stock GeForce 256 (came in my Micron) and it runs N4 fine in
D3D and OGL. I have the latest drivers (version escapes me) and DX8 on a
PIII 700 with 256MB RAM. Try upgrading to DX8 and latest drivers before
pitching your video card. I run it in 1024X768X32 in OpenGL and get 40+
frame rates with 20 cars on the track with 12 or 15 ahead and 7 behind and
most of the candy on. I do drop out the stands when online with a lot of
guys, seems to help keep the frame rate near 40 and there is no one really
watching anyway, lol.

best of luck,

edb
