Best Non-FFB Wheel...Opinions?

by John P. Wilso » Thu, 15 Nov 2001 14:55:32

Okay,

Now that I have some *cashflow* and a serious N4 ***ion, I need to
replace my overworked, undermaintained NASCAR Charger wheel.  The lack of
speed and response of a gameport (vs. USB) and the constant spiking is
making me want something more.

I'm not in the market for an FFB wheel; I want to stay with a traditional
spring/bungie-powered setup.  I just need some opinions, since it's been
something like 2 years since I last bought *any* game controller.  I also
want to stay with something that can be found (and exchanged, if needed) at
a local Best Buy, Fry's, or CompUSA.

Logitech WingMan Formula GP?
ThrustMaster NASCAR Pro Digital 2?
Microsoft Precision Racing Wheel?
Others?

Thanks very much for all your suggestions!

Best Non-FFB Wheel...Opinions?

How about Thomas? I have one and it is the shit! They cost alot more
than the "Best Buy" brands, but they last forever. You just have to
replace the pots once and awhile, it's a pretty easy procedure. If
you're sure you can live without FF, check these guys out.

I'm a GPL guy and I ordered my wheel primarily for that sim. My buddy is
a N4 guy and he really likes driving N4 with my wheel whenever he comes
over. (He's got a POS wheel that should have been thrown out with
Windows95. He kicks my ass in N4 though.)

Hope that helps.

Best Non-FFB Wheel...Opinions?

Even though you don't want FF I would suggest the Logitech MOMO.
The biggest issue I see with non FF wheels, especially in N4 is that the
centering spring is always trying to "center" the wheel even though the
forces of the car cause the wheel to actually be neutral feeling slightly to
the left.  The FF allows the wheel to find it's own proper neutral state,
not just straight up.  I typically turn the forces down to around 20-25% so
it doesn't over power the control.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Best Non-FFB Wheel...Opinions?

Schooner is right...

Using a non-FF wheel in N4 is a real chore due to the 'realism' of the pull
to the left.  It's even worse in FF wheels with FF turned off.

It can be fixed by Papy, and they know how, but they have been oddly
resistent to provide the fix for us.

You all know what it is.  I won't mention it here again :)
