Query re Hosting on Vroc

Hi all,

Just after some advice here about hosting races on VROC. I thought
that I as I had this ADSL connection which lays dormant whilst I am at
work it might be beneficial for some if I could get set up to leave it
hosting races during the day. However, last night I set it to host a
test race at Monza and asked anyone on VROC at that time to try to
join it. Remco kindly tried but kept on getting time out problems and
was never able to join a race.

I have also got a second pc with GPL on it downstairs connected to the
primary one via a network card in each and some crossover cable. Both
pc's share the ADSL connection. On a few occassions I was able to join
the race I was hosting on the primary pc from the secondary one but
also got time out errors when trying to join at times as well.

I have Zonealarm running on the primary pc but Remco was still unable
to join the race even after I disabled it.

Is there anything that anyone can suggest that may be causing the
problems I am having, any settings that I can check?

My PC's are:-

Primary - PIII600, 128MB ram, v5 5500
Secondary P233mmx, 64mb ram, Phoenix Banshee 16mb.

Hope someone can offer some help.

Regards

PH

Peter,

If you're PC downstairs is connected directly via a crossover cable I
assume
then that you're DSL connection is connected to some other internal card or
possibly a USB port ?. Anyway if that is the case it will never work
correctly.

My experience has been that GPL doesn't like having two network
connections
on the same PC period.  I have my DSL line hooked up to a hub that my two
PC's are also connected to and I can host on one and connect directly from
the
other with no problems.

Good luck, Dave

Yes your right.... the main PC upstairs has a USB ADSL modem. However,
if I don't try to join the races from my other PC which is sharing the
same connection shouldn't I be able to host races from the main PC ??

Cheers

Peter,

I have never played with a USB DSL modem but I assume that  it
is treated just like any other network device. If so,  I believe this setup
will not work correctly for you.

As an experiment you could disable the ethernet card and then try hosting
to see if that clears up the timeout problems. Also if you are using
internet
connection sharing I hear that causes problems to.

If you could get your ISP to,  I would really recommend that
you get a DSL bridge/modem with an ethernet port. This would allow you to
use
a inexpensive hardware firewall such as a linksys to connect as many PC's as
you like to you're DSL and still host.

Maybe someone else can offer more insight :)

Regards, Dave
