I'm trying to play GPL but the frame rate fluctuates from 10fps to 36.
I prefered the steady 36FPS of my old Voodoo card.  Are there any
settings I could tweak?  Or am I looking at a new vid card?

GPL is unplayable right now.  Sometimes it will lock up for up to a
second (or more).  And I end up feeding the ducks on the side of the
road at Spa.  I need help!!

I've installed it.  It says the video setting is "Direct3d7".
800x600, minimum detail.

There should be a readmed3d.txt in your gpl folder now that covers the d3d
patch.  There are some lines of text that can be changed in the core.ini
file that might/should improve how your card performs.   Hopefully that will
cover it for you.
good luck

I switched it down to 640x480 and it seems to stay at 36fps and is
actually playable now.  But I'd like to get is up to 1024x768.  I'm
runing a Duron 850 so I doubt there should be a problem doing this.

I also flashed my video card with new firmware.  I'm not sure if it
will help out but its worth a try.

How do I find out what services are running in the background on
WinME?  I am thinking that something is running in the background.
Now I"m at 640x480 and it still drops down to 10FPS.

try a utility called enditall2.  This will shut down most of your
background tasks.  Makesure tho...if you have a wheel that needs a program
running, like thrustmapper or Wingman Profiler, that you protect those (easy
to do in the util) so they don't get shut down as well.

check to see if your gfx board shares the IRQ with another card,
and if it does, play a round of pci poker to make sure all cards
have their own unique interrupt.

This helped solving my network problem I described earlier.

All the best,

My network card was running on the same IRQ as my video card.  I
changed ports and removed another card (TV).  I now see that the video
card is running on IRQ#10 along with the "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ
Steering".  I don't know if this is a problem or not.

It seems to hang in there pretty good past the first lap.  But when I
get more than 5 cars on the screen (start of a race), I get poor
performance.

Here's an update on the card.  It still sucks in GPL.  I've changed
the setting in the core.ini file a few times according to the readme.
but it still locks up.  I've also played PCI Poker with all my cards.
I only have a NIC, modem and sound card installed right now.  I
thought perhaps it was the sound card that conflicts with the video
card but no.

On grid in 20th at Silverstone I get 22FPS.  At Monza its 24FPS.
During racing it will occasionally lock up and other times it will dip
down to 10 or 15 FPS for a couple seconds.  My old Voodoo 3 2000 ran
36FPS everywhere!!!

So now what?  I've given up!  Its either get a new video card (any
recommendations?) -or- retrieve my old Voodoo3-2000 from my brother.
What should I do.

PS the system is a Duron 850 w/ABIT motherboard, 128MB, SB64PCI, an
old ISA modem and 1 Realtek8139 NIC.

Before I even installed the game :)

Of course I installed the game.  Then installed the patch :)
And read/applied the readme file.  Tried both the Geforce2 setup and
the TNT1 setup.  Neither was better than the other.

get the VROC software, get in the chat room and ask someone questions, no
doubt there might be a remedy....
