With the release of Colin ***3...

IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR A GREAT CURRENT PC RALLY SIM GAME?!!!

"Current" meaning great gfx, great features(input devices, cars, tracks)
and, most importantly, accurate car feel, physics and handling over
different terrain and bumps.

Yeah Trophy Rally is ok but the old cars just don't do it for me.

Is it that hard to take the wide open world of Motocross Madness 2, the
quality type of physics of Nascar series, the great gfx of RalliSport
Challenge, the car damage of Toca and put them all together?

I'd do it but it's not my career in life and I'm too old to change.

Well, isn't that sort of what "Xpand Rally" is supposed to be like?
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

But, I think what you are asking might be too much to ask. If you have the
environment scope of Grand Theft Auto 3, I don't think you can expect the
graphics of RalliSport and the physics of Nascar. If they ever did something
like that, I'd imagine it would cost lots and lots of money to do it... and
that's exactly why it would never be done probably, because it would be such
a huge gamble for such a specialized product.

I think the graphics in Rally Trophy are still right up there.. If a game
like Rally Trophy came out with WRC cars that are less topply than the RT
cars, same graphics and longer stages.. I think we'd have a real winner.

As for car damage, I don't really care about that. RT had great car damage
as far as I'm concerned. I know what you mean though, and it is a great
dream... I can't deny that. But, I think it might be a little unlikely and
too much to ask. Unless of course, you want to gather all your programming
friends together to make it yourself.. I'll gladly help on textures :)

I'm with you on the programming side ;-)

All we have to do is get a few hundred more people involved, and we might be
able to do this project in a few years :)

Man, I can only hope Xpand Rally is all its cracked up to be.
Screenshots look not quite as good as Rally Trophy or RalliSport
standards. Plus I have yet to see an in-car view screenshot so that's a
huge unknown.

Yeah, this would be great. I'm surprised no one is using their game
engine and doing such an idea. Too bad there's no editor cause a total
conversion would be a fun project to work on.

 SNIP

But they said that about TRD! and what did we get? a ***patch.

Having said that I don't actually think the CMR3 demo is as bad as the TRD
demos or in fact TRD as it stands now, but that's on a P4 3.06 system with a
9800 Pro. It also took forever to get the steering set up reasonably. It
still twitches a bit like TRD and the FF is useless.

Yeah, and I didn't say I was working for free, either ;-)

Well, it may not be all that easy. I think with the current state of real
time sim technology tarmac rallies like the Tour de Corse are definately on
the cards. I wouldn't put it past Papyrus, ISI and maybe even DICE, Bugbear,
Synetic or Magnetic Fields to produce a good representation of those.

Gravel, dirt, ice and mixed rallies are another matter, because there you
have the interaction between the thread pattern/studs and the soil/ice. I
don't think a whole lot is known about how that works and how to model it
(correct me if I'm wrong, DM), judging by the large number of bad tyre
choices we see in WRC.

It would be a "tour de force" for a developer to pull this off and make a
true rally sim and I certainly would like to see one, but even if there were
publisher interest and budget I think a lot of practical problems remain.

Gravel,

ok - here's the correction :-) here's how to model soil/tyre interaction for
a Sim.

(FYI - I sent this link the LFS authors last year after I was unhappy with
the reality of the rallyX track handling)

Well, if I want to pay you, I'll have to put out a product that I -know-
I'll make money off of. So, there goes the realistic physics... There's no
use doing accurate tracks either, because that will cost a lot to do, and
cut into the profit and your pay..

Looks like we are back to square one :)

Well, it returns a 404 (in Japanese) and looks suspiciously like the
contracted URLs one finds, e.g., on the racesimcentral forums. Could you
link to the thread you copied that from, by any chance? -Thanks.

It isn't because I know at least that 'semi...Interaction.pdf' can be split
into 'seminar/<something>/SoilTyreInteraction.pdf' (or is it
TyreSoilInteraction.pdf ???)

It's the middle bit that I don't have a clue on ;-)

Sorry - you're right. When you click on the original link that I posted, you
get the full URL.
