F1 2001 won't start after patch :-/

by Andre Warring » Wed, 28 Nov 2001 07:08:46

I installed the patch yesterday and everything was perfect.
Tonight I started my computer for another F1 2001 session..
I clicked the start icon, and then I got a black screen.
Only thing I could do was restarting my pc.
After reboot I had the same problem with F1 2001, black screen right
after starting it.
I uninstalled F1 2001 and reinstalled it again.
Still black screen.
Reinstalled it again without the patch.
Black screen.
Reinstalled Directx.
Reinstalled and tried different GF2 drivers.

I'm really out of options now - especially since I didn't change
anything on my computer after installing the patch yesterday..

Any help is mostly welcome!

Specs:
P3 866 GF2 GTS
SB Live
LW Momo
dx80a (also tried 8.1)

Thanks,
Andre Warringa

From what you said this may be help at all, but try creating a new player.

I was crashing back to desktop when hitting 'start' - due to some monkeying
around I had done in my PLR file.

Also, before reinstalling make sure you delete the F1 2001 folder after
uninstalling.

If none of the above helps, ermm... Windows reinstall?  Ouch.

I had the same problem after I upgraded my old system to XP. Black screen.

There is a solution though. Get a completely new system (motherboard, chip
and clean install of XP). That's what I had to do (was going to do it
anyway).

Seriously, I never actually did figure out what was wrong. At HG, others had
the same problem but never came up with a solution AFAIK. Some thought it
was related to the sound card but I don't see how that could be the cause in
of our problems.

It may well be the sound card. Using the Win2k drivers for my SB PCI128
the pc had random reboots and blue screens. I had to use AC'97 (bad
sound but stable) for a while until Creative finally came up with new
drivers 3 weeks ago! Now the problems have disappeared.

Cheers & Good Luck, Andr.

I had something similar happening, and finally got everything nice again
after uninstalling F1 2001, and then--before reinstalling--searching regedit
for "F1 2001" and deleting all entries.

Your mileage, etc. . . .

best,
David

I had the exact same problem. For me, it was solved by
moving back to full the "audio hardware acceleration" slider
in control panel (I had moved it left to try to get rid of the
occasional "stutter every 2 seconds" -problem)...

All of the above didn't help, so yes, I'm reinstalling Windows :-/
Not a real problem, it allways speeds up my pc a bit when I reinstall
windows once in a while, but I just can't stand it when I don't know
-why- an error like this occured..
I hate to see I have the same problem after going through a fresh
reinstall of windows..

Yes I read more people had the same problem.. someone on High Gear
suggested me to try the 21.83 drivers, after he installed those his
problem was gone, but that didn't work for me unfortunately.

I tried installing the latest drivers for my SBLive card, but the
folks at Creative have gone mad, they took the Liveware down from
their site and you have to order it on a cd..

Anyway, after messing around with a couple of different nvidea
drivers, upgrading to DirectX 8.1, I got more and more problems..
I wanted to play GPL but suddenly had a delay in the sound, when I
gave gas it took 3/10th of a seconds before I would hear the revs
going up, really weird. After reinstalling the original SBlive drivers
GPL also crashed after starting.

I don't want to install XP yet because I still read too much problems
with all sorts of games and hardware.. I'll let the rest of the world
betatest XP a bit more before I move on to XP, I'll stick to 98SE for
now.

So.. deltree c:\windows and here we go.. :-/

I didn't think of that one :-/
Something weird happened though while uninstalling F1 2001 which may
be cause of the problem:

After the problems I uninstalled F1 2001, using the f1 2001 uninstall
option. I reinstalled F1 2001.
Then I wanted to reinstall the patch. But after starting the patch
installer, I got a message 'are you sure you want to remove this
patch?' So apparently, for a clean uninstall, you have to uninstall
the patch first (by 'installing' the patch) and after that you have to
uninstall F1 2001.
Well, I tried that too, but still had the problems. But it can very
well be the patched messed up the reg entries after that..

Andr, this is indeed one of the ways to do it.
I had the same problem with F12001 when reinstalling it, after it got all
twisted as a result of third party patching and tweaking. I deleted
everything on the disk that had something to do with F12001, and cleaned up
everything in the registry. Then I reinstalled and all was ok. However, I
deleted it again because of the lack of FF-support and the 'not so nice
graphics', but the patch might change my mind.

The patch will change your mind - allthough I still think the graphics
are average, the driving experience as a whole is fantastic -
especially with the well-implemented force feedback.

On another note - I came home yesterday, and the first thing I did was
enter Joe's momo settings in my player file. After that I started f1
2001 and had the black screen crash. I went back to my former player
file but still had the crash.

Can it be that making an error in a player file causes F1 2001 to
crash, even when you go back to your former player file after that??

I don't think so. I was editing my player file and the source had line
breaks in it, so all the commnets were cut in half and put on the next
line. Didn't crash.

Ok, after a couple of hours work I've got a nicely fresh reinstalled
windows and everything works ok again - even the patched F1 2001 :)
No idea what caused the troubles, hope they won't come back now.

Now it's time for a long GPL session on the Ring though, couldn't play
GPL for a whole day because of my windows troubles, gotta do some
catching up now!!
