F1 2001 Won't Start

by Bob Jare » Wed, 10 Apr 2002 21:59:31

I've been unable to get F2001 to start on my computer, the symptoms are
described below. I've posted this to several game forums w/o getting a
reply. Something I was wondereing;

In looking at the folders installed on my hard drive after the installation
all of them have the attribute READ ONLY. Is this correct ? In attempting to
change the attribute the change won't "stick" - after I change it and reopen
the properties box for that folder, it has reverted to Read Only. Don't know
if this has anything to do w/ my particular problem.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

---------------------------------

Upon installing - when I attempt to start the game it goes to a black screen
w/ the hourglass cursor and never changes. Here's what I've tried so far;

Installed game in my "Games" partition. Reverted to installing in C:\ drive.

Installed the game with File Indexing turned OFF and again w/ it turned ON

Installed original version from CD.
Installed original version + Patch 1.
Installed original version + Patch 1 and 2.
Installed original version + Patch 1 and NoCD.

Tried the following NVidia drivers; 21.89, 23.11, 28.32 (both versions).

Tried to start game in every possible video resolution possible. Tried to
start in Compatibility Mode.

Same result every time. My system is as follows;

Dell Dimension 8200 1.9 512 RAM
Win XP Home Edition - NTFS file system
Dell DVD/CD ROM
Plextor 24/1040a burner
GeForce 3 Ti200 64mb RAM
Dual Monitors; Samsung 170T as primary, Samsung 570S on GeForce 2 MX 100 as
secondary.

  I just did a quick spot check of my f1 2001 files and NONE are
write-protected.  You say the 'FOLDERS' are write protected.  try opening
each folder and highlighting all the files and then changing them...failing
that, change each file individually.    Sounds like somehting has fouled up
your installation.  Did the sim run at any time or has it been like this
from the beginning..and...did you install the two developer patches??

Did you maybe install in an account which has Administrator rights and are trying to play in a Limited User account?  That may be why the files appear to be write-protected.  If so, change the account you want to play in to be a member of the Admin group.  And, make sure Indexing is on.

The individual files are not proteced, but the folders that they reside in
are all Read Only. The sim has never run on this computer. I ran both the
developer patches - as described in text of my original post.

Thanks for responding !

F1 2001 Won't Start

At a guess it sounds graphics related. I've had several games that refused
to start because at the time I was unable to get 640x480 resolution working
and that's what the inferface used. I'd try disconnecting the second monitor
and seeing if you can run 640x480 resolution. Dunno if the F1 2001 interface
runs at this res though, might be 800x600 or 1024x768. Also try the most
basic 3d setup ie. a res and color depth you know your rig will run and turn
off FSAA etc.
