MSFF: which is better? USB or Gameport connector?

by Victor Cha » Sat, 26 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I have a gameport connector version of the MSFF.  I am just wondering
"should" I have gotten the USB version?  Are there any performance
difference between the two?

Thanks.

Hmmmmmmmm?  You mean MSFF wheel does not come in USB version.  If it does,
it would be called MS Precision Racing Wheel?  Did you get the two mixed up?

Well G_Major you are incorrect, the new MSFF wheel is indeed USB and has
force feedback.

Logitech also produce a FF USB wheel.

I have both the MSFF wheels, the gameport and the new USB.

Get the USB wheel,  it it a tighter wheel, the software is updated for
profiling (now integrated into the game controller software) and the grip on
the wheel is improved.

Personally I love this wheel

MSFF: which is better? USB or Gameport connector?

Actually, saw a USB MSFFB wheel at Babbages in St. Louis tonight
($149.99 or so).

Requires DX7 and makes no mention of Immersion (tm) anywhere on the
box.

MSFF: which is better? USB or Gameport connector?

by Jim Burl » Tue, 29 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I'll bet you $1000.00 that MS does produce a USB force feedback wheel.
Either that or that box at Babbages was full of rocks.

BTW, I did read it carefully, it was NOT the MS precision racing wheel
(usb, non ffb), but in fact a USB FFB wheel.

Well aware of their choice to purchase an api (well, purchase the
whole damn company) that relied on the MIDI interface in some
misguided attempt to make hookup easier back in the pre-usb days when
Immersion required serial. Kinda backfired, eh? Especially if you own
a joyswitch.

I suspect that DX-7 includes some nifty code to allow USB with this
same API, that is why I mentioned the DX-7 requirement in my previous
post on this topic, and the lack of any Immersion credits on the box.

And I can tell you that their website does NOT reflect this new wheel
yet.

http://www.microsoft.com/products/hardware/sidewinder/devices/FFBWhee...

Not flaming ya, I was just as certain as you that they didn't make a
USB ffb wheel until I held it in my hands at Babbages in St. Louis.

'Course, I could use that $1000.00...

I think this is a case of everybody being sorta right base on the age
of their info.  According to my brother, who works at the MS Redmond
campus, they had a USB FF wheel, but pulled it because it rather
sucked and put it back for a redesign.  Apparently, the new version is
starting to ship, based upon the sightings claimed in this thread.

Not quite sure what is going on here, but the MS FF USB Wheel has been
available in the UK for a while now.
