"Should be required", as in, they're not NOW?

How do you know I have no intentions of getting a motorcycle, Thom?

Eldred,

Here in Michigan a simple written test will get you a motorcycle license.
And they wonder why most biker deaths happen in the first six months of
riding - sheesh.

Required by law here in Michigan?  No.  Only a riding test & written
test are required to get your cycle endor***t.  Not much to them.

But those safety courses are essential IMHO if you want to ride out on
our crazy roads & survive for any length of time. <g>

Not here in Vancouver. You can go into a bike shop, put down you money on a
150hp rocket, and drive away without even producing so much as a drivers
license. No different than for cars, but for a disturbing number of people
their first ride on a bike is their last ride, because of their extreme
performance levels and skill requirements . I learned to ride, as do most
people, by taking a course at the "School of Hard Knocks", and I don't
recommend it. Take a MSF course. Some will provide the bike, which allows you
to experience motorcycles in a safe environment with competent instruction, and
if you decide it's not for you, you've spent a few bucks on an interesting
experience with no further commitment. If you do get into riding you'll have
some solid skills to start with, and I believe that in some areas the MSF
courses help in getting you licensed, qualify you for reduced insurance rates,
and even deals on new bike purchases. It's the smart/safe way to go.

I didn't know it was that easy to get a license.  I just figured you had to go
through some kind of training just as with a car...  I'd want to take a class
anyway, but I don't know of anyone who'd loan me a bike to do the course.  Are
there any that have motorcycles provided?

Most colleges have them in the spring & summer.  I took mine at WCCC &
they provided the bikes.

Gee guyz in the 60s we didnt have this option so it was "git on and
crank that sucker up!" I do' believe that all 'first time riders' should
have somekind of instructions tho'... I was lucky enuff to have one
of AMA's top 10 teach me back then! I raced before I ever went
on the highway and I'd race again if I could!! <g>

Agreed.  But back in the 60's the roads, at least in this area,
contained about 1/4 the volume of cars they do today.  And somehow
people were a little more courteous to others as well.  IMO.  :-)
