Not here in Vancouver. You can go into a bike shop, put down you money on a
150hp rocket, and drive away without even producing so much as a drivers
license. No different than for cars, but for a disturbing number of people
their first ride on a bike is their last ride, because of their extreme
performance levels and skill requirements . I learned to ride, as do most
people, by taking a course at the "School of Hard Knocks", and I don't
recommend it. Take a MSF course. Some will provide the bike, which allows you
to experience motorcycles in a safe environment with competent instruction, and
if you decide it's not for you, you've spent a few bucks on an interesting
experience with no further commitment. If you do get into riding you'll have
some solid skills to start with, and I believe that in some areas the MSF
courses help in getting you licensed, qualify you for reduced insurance rates,
and even deals on new bike purchases. It's the smart/safe way to go.
